Down on the Farm: 08-10-2010

AAA Fresno Grizzlies mauled the Albuquerque Isotopes 15-3:

Brock Bond- 4 for 5, 2 2B, 3B, BB. BA= .291.
Tyler Graham- 3 for 4, 2B, HR(2), HBP, SB(29). BA= .353.
Brett Pill- 2 for 6, 2B, HR(16). BA= .278.
Jesus Guzman- 3 for 6, 2B. BA= .314.
Ben Copeland- 4 for 6. BA= .282.
Eric Hacker- 6.1 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 4.30.
Tony Pena- 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA= 6.53.

Stupendous games from Bond and Graham at the top of the order. Pena has 5 scoreless appearances in a row after a rough introduction to AAA.

AA New Hampshire Sea Dogs out hit the Richmond Flying Squirrels 11-6:

Brandon Belt- 2 for 4. BA= .341.
Andy Sisco= 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 4.58.

Sisco has pitched very well over his last 10 games except for his Aug. 4 performance giving up 5 runs in 2.1 IP. Take away that game and he has a 1.35 ERA in the other 9 games with 15 K's in 13 IP. The 12 BB's are still a problem though.

High A San Jose Giants outlasted the Lancaster Jethawks 5-4 in 10 innings:

Francisco Peguero- 3 for 6, 2 2B. BA= .316
Charlie Culberson- 2 for 4, BB, 2 SB(22). BA= .314.
Jose Flores- 4 for 5, HR(5), BA= .322.
James Simmons- 1 for 4, HR(10), BB. BA= .244.
Jorge Bucardo- 5.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 3.38.
Jason Stoffel- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's, Save(22). ERA= 4.89.

Peguero just keeps pumping out the 3 hit games. Flores has been surprisingly resilient putting together a solid season. This qualifies as a good start by Bucardo in the Lancaster wind tunnel. Stoffel has really turned it around lately. His line for the last 10 games is 0-0, 1.98, 9.2 IP, 4 BB, 16 K's with 8 Saves. I could see him being in the mix for a MLB callup by this time next year.

Low A Asheville Tourists edged the Augusta Greenjackets in 14 innings 2-1:

Chris Dominguez- 4 for 5, BB. BA= .267.
Evan Crawford- 2 for 6, 2 SB(24). BA= .255.
Brian Irving- 7 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K's. ERA= 4.29.
Chris Wilson- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 0.00.

Interesting line from Dominguez who reached base in 5 of 6 PA's. I believe this is Irving's best appearance as a pro.

Short Season: The NWL was idle.

Rookie AZL: The Giants were idle.

DSL The Phillies defeated the Giants 6-2:

Really, nothing of note here.

Of note, the Giants went about $260 K over slot to sign 6'th round pick Mike Kickham, a college LHP who looks like he might have some upside. So far the theory that the Giants may have bailed out of the international market to free up $$$ for above slot draft signings is holding up. The reason why Kickham fell was that he was demanding second round money. It looks like the Giants came pretty close to giving it to him. Good drafting and good signing!!

  1. Belt is going to get a September call-up, isn't he? We now have a 40 spot open with the Wellemeyer DFA.

I think your theory that the Giants bailed on the international market in order to spend the money on above slot draftees is holding up well, and I think it will be confirmed by the signings as they come in, per what Fla-Giants wrote about, as there were at least a handful of over-slot deals possible.

  2. So who is the Giants #1 prospect right now? I know this is very subjective in weighing ceiling vs current level, but I am interested in what you guys think...

Wheeler? He has yet to perform ANYTHING, but he does have an incredible ceiling.

Belt? His ceiling is suspect, and he does not have the history to back up his production.

Peguero? With the introduction of 2 CF in the top of the draft, I was about signing him off, but he continues to perform.

Neal? Last year's prospect-du-jour. He has had a nice progression in AA, but does it translate to major league production?

RafRod? Still young(??) and has a mile-high ceiling, but he has yet to perform.

  3. Calsnowskier - DrB and OGC are more knowledgeable then me and i have only seen a few Richmond games..but I think you are right with WHEELER and BELT being at the top....More then likely, Wheeler will be the pick of places like BA, etc..because he has prime stuff, some good peripherals and becasue they dig potential..I kinda like some results and production mixed in with that potential (which Wheeler indeed has)so I might see Belt higher right now..Just a personal preference....

I think you are also correct that guys like Peguerro and Neal come next....One guy I would also throw in there would be Tommy Joseph..I know he's only hitting .230 but showing amazing power as a 19 year old in his first year away from High School...And probably this years first rounder Gary Brown also..

  4. I like ToJo a lot as well, he just slipped my mind when I was offering possibilities. I saw a video of him at the time of the draft last year that showed his bat speed. WOW!!!! The kids looked GOOD. I am not concerned with his production yet. HS players I give about 2 or 3 years in the minors before I get too concerned (Culberson, Noonan, Fairly are getting to the end of their ropes, and Culberson has had a break-out season this year)

I would say that our ranking is SOMETHING like...

    Wheeler
    Belt
    ToJo
    Neal
    RafRod

Crawford, Kieschnick, Culberson, Perez, Bucardo, Peguero, Dominguez (he needs to have a big year next year because of his age, though) and MAYBE Jones would all be competitors to round out the top 10. I will not rank Brown until he inks.

Interesting how Adrianza and Sosa are not really in the discussion anymore.

I do not rank ANY of our prospects as Blue-Chippers, though. I think only Wheeler and RafRod have the lights-out ceilings that are required for potential Blue-Chip status, but they need to perform a little before you can put them in that class.

  5. DrB, your pre-season fave, Evan Crawford has been traded for Mike Fontenot. There goes the last 40 man spot I was hoping Belt might get.

  6. I would defer to DrB on matters like this, as I think he has a better handle on the prospects.

But I do have an opinion. To me Wheeler clearly has to be #1: he is the only remaining prospect on the team that was on various Top 100 overall prospects lists and the only disappointment has been that he didn't pitch enough. His stats were very nice on a peripherals basis. He just has to get healthy. And use nail polish to harden his nails.

I think Belt has pushed himself into the #2 spot. I like calsnowskier's list.

But once Brown signs, I think I would put him #2 just ahead of Belt, mainly because of how well he did in college this season plus how he handled Cape Cod last season, and finally because Belt did this out of the blue, he was actually considered an overdraft by most of the expert observers of the draft.

Parker I'm not sure where he would go exactly compared to other prospects, but I would put him in the group after RafRod. I would also add Kickham to that list, plus once they sign, Austin Southall, and Jake McCasland, should he sign, sounds like he wants more money.

  7. Mike Fontenot, huh? Not exactly a "big bat" but he's a lefthanded hitter who can play 2B, right? With the way Freddy is going, that could be a nice piece of the puzzle. I still like Crawford's potential, but with the drafting of Brown and Parker, he was way down the depth chart for his player profile.

I have Wheeler as my #1 Giants prospect right now. I'll wait until the end of the minor league season to sort out the rest, but has Neal's stock really gone down? He has had a pretty good season in a pretty tough league for hitters.

  8. At this point, I think RaRod needs to drop significantly in our lists. Reports are that his attitude is lacking, and his numbers aren't that impressive either. Granted, he's young still, but this isn't encouraging. I haven't attempted my Top Whatever listing yet, but I suspect RaRod will not be in my top 10.

  9. Agree with Lyle that RafRod should be down on the lists..Jsut way too many questions...But he is young, so there is alot of time...

Really like the pick-up for Fontenot..He can hit...and he can play over the IF which we need given the struggles of Sanchez, Sandoval, and Renteria.....And the cost in Evan Crawford was barely a blip...

Don't think Neal's stock has gone down at all...Looking real good in Richmond, just not getting the HRs..

And disagree wthat Noonan is getting close to the end of his rope..He's a 21 year old playing in AA ball and not doing all that bad...Hoepfully next year he really busts out...

  10. Good catch on Noonan comment, SteveVA.

Noonan is playing young against players 3-4 years older than he is, and thus that much more experienced. And 21 is not really that old for a prospect, unless you are talking about a superstar player. For a solid regular starter, I think he's on track for that, and that is about where he was viewed when drafted.

Noonan showed huge progress in the last two months of last season and is appearing to be doing that again this season. Plus, he was set back a bit this season by an injury.

Culberson has broke out this year, so I wouldn't say he's at the end of his rope yet, but he was getting pretty close.

Fairley, unfortunately, has been a big disappointment, but given his background, it is not a total surprise either.
