When Melvin Mora hit a HR into the short porch down the RF line to tie the game at 2-2 of Jeremy Affeldt in the top of the 8'th inning, it brought back some very nasty memories from last night. It seemed like deja vu all over again! Fortunately, the Giants offense, led by Andres Torres and Buster Posey plated 3 runs in the bottom of the inning giving Brian Wilson a nice, easy save opportunity and he didn't let it get away. Key lines:
Andres Torres- 1 for 4, HR(14). BA= .284. Who is the team MVP? Torres, Huff or Posey? My vote it Andres Torres! But, it's a close call.
Freddy Sanchez- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .289. Freddy's hot streak continues. He even made a great catch at a key moment on a looper hit over his head into short RF. He's partially forgiven for that terrible relay throw last night.
Buster Posey- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .330. Does this kid pretty much have it all going on, or what? In addition to the 2 run double to give the Giants 2 insurance runs, he threw the most perfect strike to 2B to nail CarGone on a SB attempt I've ever seen. The ball and the runner arrived at exactly the same time. Sanchez' glove didn't have to move. I'm tellin' ya, it was a thing of beauty!
Madison Bumgarner- 1 for 3, 2B. BA- .167. Bum drove in the 2'nd run with a line double through the gap to triples alley.
Madison Bumgarner- 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 2 K's. Even when Bum's fastball is in the 89-90 range, it sure seems to jump on hitters quick. Nice job tonight, kid!
Brian Wilson- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 1.67. The more I think about last night's game, the more I'm realizing that it was just blind, dumb luck. Just no way to rationalize that busted bat sending a line drive over the head of the OF. Just no way!
Amazingly, with the W tonight, the Giants crept to within 4 games of the NL West leading San Diego Padres who lost their 6'th game in a row, this time to the D'Backs 7-4. They also blew the Rockies off their tail by another game, 7 back of the Pads and 3 back of the Giants. In the Wild Card race, the Phillies are leading the Dodgers late, so will likely remain 1.5 games ahead of the Giants, while the Cards lost to Houston to drop 4 games off the Wild Card lead tied with the Rockies.
Tim Lincecum, once again, tries to get back on track against in the rubber game of this series with Colorado. Maybe it's not a must-win, but winning this series would be a very nice send off to the upcoming road trip starting in LA.
