Down on the Farm: 08-07-2010

AAA Round Rock Express topped the Fresno Grizzlies 4-1:

Nothing to see here.

AA Portland Sea Dogs out hit the Richmond Flying Squirrels 9-6:

Thomas Neal- 2 for 5, 2 2B. BA= .289.
Brandon Belt- 2 for 4, 2B, BB. BA= .339.
Conor Gillaspie- 2 for 5, 2 2B. BA= .290.
Sharlon Schoop- 2 for 4, 2 2B. BA= .263.
Darren Ford- 2 for 4, 2B., SB(31). BA= .248.
Clayton Tanner- 3 IP, 11 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA= 3.42.
Andy Sisco- 3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 4.86.

Doubles galore!! Great to see the lads rapping them out. This was Tanner's worst start in quite awhile. With that K/BB, the law of averages was bound to catch up with him.

High A San Jose Giants crushed the Bakersfield Blaze 15-6:

Francisco Peguero- 3 for 6, HR(8). BA= .310.
Jose Flores- 3 for 6. BA= .311.
Johnny Monell- 2 for 5, HR(15), 2 BB. BA= .261.
Charlie Culberson- 2 for 4, HR(15), 2 BB. BA= .316.
Ehire Adrianza- 2 for 5, BB. BA= .253.
James Simmons- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(8), BB. BA= .244.

Homers galore! Simmons has improved his BA each month this season. He is hitting .292 over his last 10 games, and .300 in August. I'll say this about Simmons, if he ever figures out how to hit, he's the best prospect on this team. He has everything else going on.

Low A Asheville Tourists downed the Augusta Greenjackets 7-2:

Hector Correa- 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 4.79.
Zack Wheeler- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 4 BB's, 3 K's. ERA= 4.42.

Is Correa a sleeper? He's 22 y.o. Has 53 K's in 35.2 IP, against 14 BB's. His line for the last 10 appearances is 2-2, 3.46, 13 IP, 1 BB, 24 K's. Them's pretty awesome secondary stats there! Rockies first round draft pick from last year, Tyler Matzek pitched 6 innings of no-hit ball in this one, but gave up 5 BB's against 7 K's.

Short Season Eugene Emeralds edged the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 4-3 in 12 innings:

Jeff Arnold- 3 for 4, 2 HR(2), BB, SB(1). BA= .253.
Shane Kaufman- 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 4.02.
Jeff Schumer- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 0.00.
Stephen Harrold- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 4.05.
Stephen Shackleford- 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 0 K's. ERA= 9.00.

Wow! Arnold did it all tonight, huh? No sign of this kind of performance before tonight. Time will tell if it's a fluke. Schumer and Shack make their S-K debuts.

Rookie AZL Dodgers trounce the Giants 9-4:

Carlos Willoughby- 1 for 3, 2 BB. BA= .296.
Rafael Rodriguez- 1 for 3, 2B. BA= .281.
Reiner Roibal- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 0.00.
Jake Shadle- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.

The Dodgers erupted for 8 runs in the 5'th inning in this one. The Giants are really treating Roibal with kid gloves, huh?

DSL Yankees outlasted the Giants 8-7 in 14 innings:

Gabriel Cornier- 0 for 1, 5 BB. BA= .275.
Miguel Ferrer- 4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 2.14.

  1. I am going totally off of memory here, but wasn't Correa actually a pretty high prospect with the Fish before getting hurt? We essentially traded Tasch for him (a ML reliever for a low-A pitcher), so you would think he would need to have a decent ceiling...

  2. DId some checking. Yeah, Correa was drafted in the 4'th round of the 2006 draft by Florida. He had 83 K's in just over 50 IP, in the NYP league, the approximate equivalent of Salem-Keizer in the Giants system, in 2007. His K/IP dropped precipitously after a promotion to the SAL which suggests a drop in velocity which may have been the first signs of a UCL tear. I think you are right, the Giants got him for Tasch and he missed the entire 2009 season. Although his ERA is unspectacular, his K/IP are and look like he's getting back to 2007 form. Man, the Giants like to lay in the weeds for those TJ surgery guys, huh?

  3. Great info on his history, thanks... As far as the trade goes, we actually traded Tasch to Phily for Ronnie Paulino then traded Paulino to Florida a day or two later for Correa.

I thought it was a weird trade at the time because at the time, our BU catcher was still Holm (Whiteside was still just a minor league filler) and Paulino seemed to be a great fit for the G's.

  4. Yes, I'd still like Ronny Paulino to be our backup catcher. That was a weird trade. On the other hand, it looks like maybe some Giants scout did a great job figuring out Correa, so maybe the trade wasn't as bad as it appeared at the time?

  5. Yeah, that was a head puzzler to me too, particularly since Paulino can hit and play defense. At minimum, I thought we would be able to get more for him than we did, and wouldn't have minded having him pair up with Molina, so that Bengie could legitimately sit out more games.

Wow, what a great K/BB ratio, the Giants scouts sure did their job on that one.
