In recent years the Giants have been terrible at closing out series and road trips. Today was no different as Keaton Winn suddenly fell apart in the fourth inning getting knocked out of the game in a hail of line drives with the score 7-1 and the game all but over. Key Lines:
Michael Conforto LF- 2 for 3, HR(7), BB. BA= .275. It's hard to say there were any bright spots in this game but 7 HR by Conforto puts him on a pace for about 30 on the season. I'm thinking he could have some value at the trade deadline?
Keaton Winn RHP- 3.2 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 0 BB, 1 K, GO/AO= 7/1. ERA= 5.63. There is some internet chatter that Winn started tipping his pitches or the Rockies figured out a "tell". The problem with that theory is most of the damage came off hanging splitters. Generally if he was tipping his pitches, you would expect the batters to lay off the splitter and sit on fastballs. More likely Winn just started elevating his pitches. You have to wonder if his elbow is barking again or if there is some other physical issue going on. It was definitely not BABIP luck as it was one line drive hit after another. Rockies were barrelling 'em up.
Randy Rodriguez RHP- 2.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 3.86. Rodriguez once again displayed an electric fastball touching triple digits. Another bright spot.
The loss dropped the Giants deeper into 4'th place in the NL West as the third place D'Backs won. The Giants are now 9 games behind the Dodgers, 2.5 games behind the Padres and 1.5 games behind the D'Backs. The Giants are 2.5 games behind the final Wild Card playoff spot.
The Giants return home tomorrow evening with Logan Webb RHP trying to get them off to a great start to the homestand facing Andrew Abbott LHP.
Nick Ahmed SS left the game early due to worsening soreness in his wrist which was injured by a 108 MPH line drive almost 2 weeks ago.
they may be forced to rush snell's rehab if winn is pitching hurt, i don't think wisenhunt is ready for a call up. i'd honestly look to sign syndergaard to a minor league contract with all the injuries happening to our starters. more likely than not luciano is coming up. i've loved ahmed but, he has been very injury prone.
ReplyDeleteKrukow was saying that a pitcher throwing the splitter can wiggle his glove a bit as he is getting the grip on the ball with the splitter grip. That and hitters can see more of the white of the ball. So, I think you could be right in that they laid off the splitter and he was throwing his fastball up that they were sitting on. Derald Cook
ReplyDeleteMy understanding is most of the hits came off hanging splitters.
DeleteWhat's hard to figure was how well he did for 3 innings: 10 batters, lots of GBs. Did he just start getting the ball up? Bang bang bang
DeleteIf ahmed needs time off, it is not time to interrupt Luci's development...use Fitz and see what he can do
ReplyDeleteLooks like Schmidt is on the roster. That's ok I'm a fan. Its interesting looking at Luciano's stats 2024. His power numbers are down (1 home run), but his strikeout rate is down, and walk rate is up. He has a OBP of 407. Are those numbers good? Some of it looks good except for power. It looks like he's working on his batting approach, which should be what the minors are for. So that's good that they are not interrupting Luciano 's development. Let's see where's he's at after a bigger sample size
ReplyDeleteMaybe Wisely should get a look?
ReplyDeleteA Tampa Bay draftee may well have some cojones: 1584 PAs and he just keeps keeps getting better.
FWIW in the minors, although mainly a 2B, he's played every defensive position except catcher. Plus DH.
Estrada might be the most trade-able Giant, and they do need something, don't they?
Luciano and Wisely up the middle for the next 6-10 years?
If nothing else, FZ/Melvin proved last night that things could get worse!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lineup! Guaranteed to lose? Pathetic performance.
Slater should get a chance to play out of his funk but leading off?
Who would bat .128/.306/.128/.434 FIRST?
It seems early, just 40 games (25%) into the season, to play for draft position...
