A throwing error by Nick Ahmed apparently caused by the muddy infield was the difference in the game but the big blow as a 3run HR by Bryce Harper in a 4-run third inning. Key Lines:
Thairo Estrada 2B- 1 for 3, HR(5), HBP. BA= .256. Estrada is hitting .346 over his last 7 games.
Jakson Reetz C- 1 for 1, HR(1). BA= 1.000. Reetz replaced Blake Sabol behind the plate after Austin Slater PH for Sabol. His HR in the 9'th inning cut the deficit to 1 run. Fun. Fact: This was not Reetz' first MLB AB. He had 2 in 2021 with the Nationals.
Logan Webb RHP- 4 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 3.50. Webb's day started to go south in the second inning when Nick Ahmed lost his footing and sailed one WAY over LMWJ's head for a 2-base error putting the leadoff batter on 2B. Bohm later scored on on a comebacker that got past Webb because he was desperately trying to avoid the sharp end of a broken bat. Things like that happen when you are going bad. There was nothing flukey about the 3'rd inning and Harper's 3-run blast. Bryce Harper is just really good at hitting pitched baseballs and Webb hung a changeup.
Sean Hjelle RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 2.70. Is Hjelle finally starting to find traction? Maybe Melvin's patience with him will pay off. A healthy, effective Hjelle would be a huge addition to the pitching staff.
Wasn't there a Baltimore manager who said: "The key to winning baseball games is pitching, fundamentals, and three run homers."
ReplyDeleteSums up the Giants latest loss — nay, losses — pretty well...
Withstanding all, the G-men current record is still just 2½ games out of the playoffs, and a 4-game winning streak away from a .500 road trip.
ReplyDeleteIt could happen: just drive in the runners! Top of the lineup left 9 on base, just needed 2 RBI's by Lee, Wade, or Flores, chances were there...
colorado is going to be the make or break series for the giants. lose the series, it will be time to call up heliot ramos as the schedule is going to be brutal after colorado. slater has had a great run as a giant but, i think his time is running out to get the bat on track.
ReplyDeleteGood to see Hjelle hitting his stride..It would be nice to not have to worry about the Bullpen given the stench of the lineup....Thank Goodness ESTRADA seems to be finding his groove but the rest of lineup is subpar at every position. And how in the world can the worst hitter on the team , Matt Chapman and his .215/.260 and striking out once every 4 ABs, continue to lead the team in ABs? Maybe a few games off could help?? At the least, drop him down to the 8th/9th spot...And then there's the mind boggling Soler..
ReplyDeleteBefore the season started, I though it had the chance of going off the rails early, but that was because of depending on inexperienced/young SPs and LHRP...We are seeing some cracks there now but hopefully Snell can come back and help fill the cracks.. I don't think anybody expected the lineup AS A WHOLE to struggle this bad and derail the team and make it appear this bad. The big question is what does FZ do, just sit and wait or at least try something that might give the offence a jolt?
Like seeing Black given a shot, but is this the right moment? Trying to right a reeling Giants ship on the Road against the hottest team in baseball?
SteveVA
I didn't see the game, but Black kept them in the game till the 5th inning when Harper hit another 3 run homer I think Black should have been brought up 2 weeks ago. Must have been cool for him to get his major league debut near his home town. Would be interested to hear how he looked.
DeleteThis skid is a combination of the Giants playing bad and the Phillies being a sizzling hot team (16 wins in their last 19 games) . Losing your 2 top catchers on consecutive days also put them in a scramble mode. It's too bad that with a little clutch hitting they should have won Fridays game. I want to see what their pitching staff will be like when they get Snell and Cobb in the rotation. Their starting pitching should be good enough to give them a chance to win on many nights. Their main bullpen pitchers have been pretty good, the problem has been the pitchers they bring in when they're behind. They have 2 youngsters Miller and Rodriguez who have electric fastballs. Their pitching should keep them competitive in the long run. I hope the offense gets a little better., And it should get better. Read an article that scoring is down in MLB. Maybe rule changes not working. Yes they need to turn around soon. It may be up to FZ to make the right moves in season to spark this team. That's his job.
ReplyDeleteMoving the deck chairs on the Titanic. This team is berift of talent from the owner's box all the way down to the depths of the minors... Farhan's 5 years have been a brillant failure in every aspect.........
DeleteReally, Black's first start has not thrown more then 75 pitchesin Sac. You extend him after a bit of a scary 4th.
ReplyDeleteDudes I'm talking to you Melvin, you know better.
Where was Bryan price?
Oh yeah, his major eague debut is with Reetzi
Really, Farhan! Sabol a better choice at least experience wise.
Giants are a Cluster F@#K!
Oh and we have Farhan texting Heliot > dude you are the Head of Baseball
Operations
You not be talking direct to minor league players.
Talk to your minor league ops persons and management.
Great to encourage/
But you are blowing smoke up Ramos"s kilt .
Listen to your Mom you have no clue what a baseball player looks like.
Take your slide rule and put it where the sun dont shine.
Sorry Doc!
Super pissed.

It's not just the 36 games of 2024, it a carryover from the last 50-60 games of 2023: they just quit scoring.
ReplyDeleteAdding offense only works when the players perform.
FZ can lead the horses to water but he can't make them drink...
this is becoming very concerning, if we lose the series to colorado, it will be time to start shaking up the roster with austin slater likely being the first DFA for heliot ramos. the schedule is gonna get brutal after colorado and if the season falls off the rails before the all-star break, ownership may be forced to overhaul the front office in 2025. kim ng would be a good replacement option for FZ.
DeleteInteresting comments. I think the manager usually gets replaced 1st. Would they fire Melvin after 1 year? He has a 3:year contract. Hope that doesn't happen otherwise the Giants will become a dumpster fire. Kim Ng would be a great replacement for FZ if they can get her to come, which I doubt. If they fire FZ 1 year after giving him a 3 year contract, a good candidate will not want SF
