The Giants did not do Willie Mays proud on his birthday. Mason Black was a gamer for 4 innings but Bryce Harper(him again) and probably a lack of run support and too many pitches broke him in the 5'th. The Giants offense as has become the norm, stunk it up. Key Lines:
Jung Hoo Lee CF- 2 for 4. BA= .252. Not many bright spots for the offense today. If the Giants offense is going to improve it has to start with JHL getting on base at better than a .304 clip. He'll likely have to hit over .300 to do that as pitchers have not reason to not challenge him on every single pitch.
Lamonte Wade Jr DH- 2 for 3. BA= .347. The first and third batters in the lineup reached base 4 times with 0 Runs or RBI's to show for it. Slater PH for LMWJ again and struck out.
Bottom 5 batters in lineup- 0 for 16, 1 BB. Pathetic!
Mason Black RHP- 4.1 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 3 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 10.38. Like I said, Black was a gamer for 4 innings. Not sure why he went out for the 5'th inning or was not pulled as soon as he allowed a baserunner. He went 5 innings twice this year in the minors. Somone said he never went more than 75 pitches. He went 84 today. Oh, and Bryce Harper is very good at hitting pitched baseballs. The Giants could use a hitter like him.
The Loss drops the Giants into sole possession of 4'th place in the NL West, 8.5 games behind the Dodgers and 3 behind the Padres, 3 behind in the Wild Card Race. Their season could be all but over by the time they complete this road trip in Colorado.
The road trip from hell moves on to Coors Field where Kyle Harrison LHP tries to break the spell against Dakota Hudson RHP.
There were some choice comments about today's game after yesterday's Game Wrap. I will try to copy and paste them into the comments here. LOL! Fun times!
Really, Black's first start has not thrown more then 75 pitchesin Sac. You extend him after a bit of a scary 4th.
ReplyDeleteDudes I'm talking to you Melvin, you know better.
Where was Bryan price?
Oh yeah, his major eague debut is with Reetzi
Really, Farhan! Sabol a better choice at least experience wise.
Giants are a Cluster F@#K!
Oh and we have Farhan texting Heliot > dude you are the Head of Baseball
Operations
You not be talking direct to minor league players.
Talk to your minor league ops persons and management.
Great to encourage/
But you are blowing smoke up Ramos"s kilt .
Listen to your Mom you have no clue what a baseball player looks like.
Take your slide rule and put it where the sun dont shine.
Sorry Doc!
Super pissed.
Richard in Winnipeg
Ha ha! I definitely feel your pain!
DeleteLol enjoyed Richards rant! I've never heard of a GM texting a minor leaguer, I can see a GM communicating with a major league player. I didn't see the game but followed it. I was glad that Black pitched well for 4 innings but as for going out in the 5th inning maybe it had something to do with Webb pitching 4 innings and Winn 2/3 a inning the last 2 games, bullpen was taxed. Today's game didn't upset me, they were going against Zack Wheeler, they weren't going to break out of it today, didn't expect a win. Red Sox pitching staff have a top era in MLB, the Phil's are red hot, 2 tough teams to start the trip.
DeleteBravo Richard! You are spot on. Unfortunately, until Mr. Johnson decides that hs is actually committed to winning and building a championship caliber team and organization, we're stuck with the likes of a Farhan or some other lacky that is satisfied with having the title of Pres/GM etc. but does't actually care about winning. And until the fnas stop showing up and send a very loud message to the Johnson family, that isn't going to happen anytime soon.
Deletei'm gonna give melvin a mulligan for leaving mason black in too long because the bullpen has been overworked at this point. colorado is a must win series, if they lose the series, you may be seeing the kids coming up from sacramento sooner than planned. FZ will be in a no win situation if that happens.
ReplyDeleteRichard expressed SOME of my feelings! I thought yesterday was a stupid spot to start Black in Philly yet when watching the Game after 4 innings I thought "OK we dodged a bullet" and it was gonna be a great 4 inning experience for the KId...but noooooooo...not in 2024 SF Giant Land where everything the GM, Manager and Hitters touch turn to you know what.....But Thank God we at least got to watch Chapman for 4 More ABs and 3 more Ks in his pursuit of the Mendoza line! This team is a Mongolian Clusterfudge of the highest order right now. Very hard to stomach.

ReplyDeleteI didn't see the game, but Black kept them in the game till the 5th inning when Harper hit another 3 run homer I think Black should have been brought up 2 weeks ago. Must have been cool for him to get his major league debut near his home town. Would be interested to hear how he looked.

ReplyDeleteThis skid is a combination of the Giants playing bad and the Phillies being a sizzling hot team (16 wins in their last 19 games) . Losing your 2 top catchers on consecutive days also put them in a scramble mode. It's too bad that with a little clutch hitting they should have won Fridays game. I want to see what their pitching staff will be like when they get Snell and Cobb in the rotation. Their starting pitching should be good enough to give them a chance to win on many nights. Their main bullpen pitchers have been pretty good, the problem has been the pitchers they bring in when they're behind. They have 2 youngsters Miller and Rodriguez who have electric fastballs. Their pitching should keep them competitive in the long run. I hope the offense gets a little better., And it should get better. Read an article that scoring is down in MLB. Maybe rule changes not working. Yes they need to turn around soon. It may be up to FZ to make the right moves in season to spark this team. That's his job.

Moving the deck chairs on the Titanic. This team is berift of talent from the owner's box all the way down to the depths of the minors... Farhan's 5 years have been a brillant failure in every aspect.........

...and another one from the Game Wrap for the 5/5 game. I am afraid they might be getting perilously close to a point of no return for making the postseason let alone winning the division.
DeleteSince ~90% of the Giants' team are Zaidi's acquisitions, he is to blame for his team's abysmal performance, although we seemed happy with the team he put together this year until they fell on their face. Some even thought they could compete with the Billion Dollar Dodgers.
ReplyDeleteIt is a good team on paper performing badly with precious few bright spots and glaring failures.
Eerily similar to 2021 when nearly everyone performed abnormally well now nearly everyone is performing abnormally poorly, including many of the same players.
Will carrying thus far exhibited results through 22% of the season continue for the next 78%?
The spotty pitching should get better, more consistent, but the position players are who they are, there is no sure rescue coming: either the runs per game increases and the Giants begin winning some games that they give up 4 or more runs, or even a .500 season won't be achievable.
Winning just 1 of 21 games when giving up 4 or more runs is an offensive failure — the 2021 Giants went 17-7 when giving up 4 runs (37-39 when giving up 4 or more).
They just have to score more runs.
I dont get the 4 innings/60 pitches "rule" for G's minor league pitchers...these guys all did more than that in HS and college...such kid-glove treatment teaches them to be a wimp, not a HORSE. If you want limits to protect them, give them an extra day of rest, or alternate long and short starts. Snell is a "five-and-diver," and should not be the model for our young pitchers.
ReplyDeleteI blame the curse of JD Davis. Chapman seemed overrated and his signing questionable. The team was arguably better off with Davis at 3B for a lower price. Chapman has performed as I feared based on his trend (and I fear he's not going to get a lot better) and, while Davis hasn't hit well in Oakland, I attribute that to the turmoil he experienced with the waiver thing and the loss of his salary. Were Davis still a Giant, I suspect he'd be doing just fine and probably making fewer errors at 3B than Chapman, oddly enough.
ReplyDeleteIf the bats of Chapman, Ahmed, Soler, Slater and Conforto don’t wake up, are there position youngsters in the minors who’ve earned legitimate claims to being given extended playing time in the majors? Do you think any of the likes of Ramos, Schmitt, Luciano, Villar, Wisely, Matos, Meckler, etc. are really ready … or, is this a situation of a development organization that’s still just not ready to supply enough of the parts the Giants need to win in the big leagues? (Personally, I’d like to find out. Instead of watching some 30-something ex-stars who’ve clearly seen better days try to catch fire, I’d like to actually use much of the rest of the season to see what we’ve got in homegrown talent.)
ReplyDelete20% does not make a season!
ReplyDeletePlaying the Red Sox and the Phillies on the road is tough.
At this moment, the Phillies are the best team in MLB and the Giants are struggling.
It's early May, there are 126 games to go.
AAA players, especially playing in Sacramento, are not better than seasoned veterans: hitting ML pitchers is not easy, it is so much harder than the Pacific Coast League. PCL pitchers are the best non-MLB pitchers, but if they were ready to pitch in the majors, they would be!
Whining and wringing of hands is premature
