Game Wrap 5/26/2024: Mets 4 Giants 3

The Giants flipped the script and came from ahead to lose this one blowing a 3-1 lead in the 9'th inning and losing on a walkoff.  Key Lines:

Heliot Ramos LF- 1 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .274.  Heliot continues to put together good AB's and make hard contact.  The BA has slipped a bit but I'm cautiously optimistic he's turned a corner.

Brett Wisely SS- 2 for 3, HR(1).  BA= .438.  So, is Brett Wisely the starting SS?  He started this game against a LHP and homered.  If that's the case, Luciano needs to go down and play every day and someone else needs to back up SS. Right now Wisely appears to be a more confident fielder and is hitting with authority against both RHP and LHP's.

Logan Webb RHP- 7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 2.74.  So do we call it getting "Webb'd" now?  Wow!  Just no support in the lineup or bullpen.

Tyler Rogers RHP- 0 .1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 0 K, HBP.  ERA= 3.24.  Tyler Rogers is a pretty good setup man, situational reliever and can even relieve for multiple innings.  He's not a closer, never has been, never will be.  The groundballs are nice but just not enough K's and too much opportunity for bad BABIP luck.  Make no mistake though, this was not bad BABIP luck.  He was getting barrelled up.  I wondered along with everybody else why he stayed out there but I concluded there were too many unavailable pitchers and Melvin decided he had no choice but to sink or swim with Rogers.  He sank.

With the Loss, the Giants remained 5.5 games behind the NL West leading Dodgers who lost their 5'th straight.  The Giants fell into a tie with the Padres for the final Wild Card playoff spot.

Blake Snell LHP returned from paternity leave today and is scheduled to start tomorrow's game against the Phillies and Taijuan Walker RHP in Oracle Park, but the baby did not arrive during the 3-day window so this start is not set in stone.

Churn Watch:

Nick Avila RHP was optioned back to AAA Sacramento to make room for Blake Snell to return from paternity leave.  Another reason Melvin was squeezed for 9'th inning options.

First pitch in the bottom of the 9th was the only bat-on-ball that was not hit well.
Well placed, yes, but just a high bouncer up the middle, can-of-corn if Rogers grabs it – or better, not try to get it so it gets to Wisely in time.
    Oh well, those things happen.
Seven batters – 7 – later, 8th of the inning, 3 runs in, no "batter" had not hit the ball hard, and the 2 that didn't hit the ball hard were (1) hit in the upper arm by pitch and (2) walked intentionally.
Did anyone not think that it was pretty obvious after the 4th batter that Rogers was getting the ball up into the hitters' zone where they could get good wood on it? Or not throwing strikes?
    Which they did, hitter-after-hitter.
After the 4th batter was hit in the upper arm, was anyone (else) thinking that Tyler didn't have it this afternoon?
Did anyone other than "Bo-Mel" think Rogers was going to get out of this mess?

I copied and pasted this comment from yesterday's Game Wrap since it was about today's game. As I discussed in the post, I got the feeling from the way Dave Fleming and Javy Lopez were commenting it was Rogers or bust. I think it's likely Melvin had several pitchers on the unavailable list.

    2. Wonder what would have happened if it had gone to x-tra inninngs?

    3. I thought about that as I was watching the game. I'm pretty sure Melvin didn't want it to go extra innings.

    4. the only other option might have been erik miller who is worse than rogers.

    5. Sacrifice a winnable game to save the bullpen for 6 games AT HOME against the Phillies and Yankees?
Or, after using 5 or 6 pitchers per game for a couple weeks, the cupboard was bare...

    6. I thought about Eric Miller and maybe BoMel was saving him to possibly open today's game against the phils

  2. Maybe BoMel not knowing for sure that Snell is starting tomorrow entered into his thinking of not using another pitcher besides Rogers. This was a crazy but successful road trip. The Giants lose 2 games they led in the 9th inning but won 4 games they came back in the late innings. I believe no team has done this in years Wisely had another big hit against Aroldis Chapman. I remember thinking Wisely must be swinging the bat well.

  3. I believe that Doval was perhaps unavailable due to frequent use. However, elite closers should be able to stack several appearances in a row. That said, a bullpen should also be able to spell a closer, periodically. The Giants should've had this game in hand. And somebody should've been at the ready to relieve Rogers, who also had been getting a bit of work, of late, if necessary. Oh well. They won the series and Webb was dominant, again.

    1. Doval was definitely unavailable after being used in the previous 2 games and 3 of the last 4. 2 of the previous 4 games went to extra innings. The bullpen pitched a total of 21 innings in the previous 4 games for an average of just over 5 innings each game. Then, Snell is scheduled to start today. As some have taken great pains to point out repeatedly, Snell can't be counted on for more than 5 innings and it's possible he may go back on paternity leave at any moment. Now, Gabe Kapler and Felipe Alou would have taken the attitude that they will do everything to win today and let tomorrow take care of itself but they were both run out of town mostly because they burned out their bullpens. Bochy and Melvin both tend to manage more for the long haul.

    2. Albeit in a MUST-WIN game so Bochy could change pitchers every batter, was this reminiscent of game 4 of the 2016 NLDS, when all that was needed was a DP grounder to seal the win?
      But No...

    3. This was not a MUST-WIN game.

    4. That's what was meant: that MUST-WIN did NOT compare, otherwise, the relentless hit hit hit when all that was needed was a DP grounder.
Actually, in 2016, the DP grounder did come, but it was too late.

  4. Acuna is out for the season with a torn ACL. Any chance the Braves would be interested in one of the Giants' outfielders and who would it be? Slater Derald Cook

  5. I was thinking that Walker could have closed it out.
That was my call when I saw Rogers coming in.
Like him, but you need strike out stuff.
    Walker is relentless.

  6. Not quite as good as a Giant win, but more good news: Angel Hernandez has retired! He has "umpired" his last game, if you can call what he did "umpiring"!

  7. Doc mentions Spencer Howard 3 times in May, said "Howard is depth for the MLB rotation" in April, and tomorrow he starts for the Giants.
Perhaps, against "Forever Giant" Zack Wheeler, 6-3, 2.53 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, he's the Sacrificial Lamb – wonder who goes to Sacramento for His Honor, hopefully not Randy Rodriguez, but how many times can Hjelle go down?
    Over/under: 4 runs, 2 innings?

  8. Woohoo, Giants and Padres TIED for 2ND WC, but 3rd might be the better position: plays the Central Winner, not the team left out between Phillies and Braves, although there seems to be some hiccups in Atlanta. Should we shed a tear?
