Game Wrap 5/2/2024: Giants 3 Red Sox 1

Mike Yastrzemski led the Giants offense with a home run in the crib where his granddad built a hall-of-fame career and the bullpen picked up Kyle Harrison who allowed just 1 run in 5 innings despite issuing 5 walks.  Key Lines:

Mike Yastrzemski RF- 1 for 2, HR(3).  BA= .242.  YtY got the Giants on the board in the top of the third inning with the solo HR.  The BoSox answered back in the bottom of the inning but were held scoreless the rest of the way.  What a great day for YtY!

Giants scored the winning runs in the 7'th inning on 3 consecutive singles by Bailey, Chapman and Estrada folllowed by a Sac Fly by Nick Ahmed.

Kyle Harrison LHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 5 BB, 7 K's, GO/AO= 4/1.  ERA= 3.79.  Obviously not his best command but maybe effectively wild?  Blake Snell must have looked on approvingly!  95 pitches in 5 IP.

Bullpen- 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.   Scoreless frames from Ryan Walker RHP, Erik Miller LHP, Tyler Rogers RHP and Camilo Doval RHP with Doval recording his 6'th Save.  Is this group a "core four" to build the bullpen around?

The Giants gain 0.5 games on the idle Dodgers and are tied for 2'nd place in the NL West with the Padres.

The Giants move on to Philadelphia where Jordan Hicks RHP faces Aaron Nola RHP in game 1 tomorrow evening.

Churn WatchDaulton Jefferies RHP was optioned back to AAA Sacramento with Randy Rodriguez RHP getting the call to take his place on the Active Roster.

  1. Homeplate umpiring was tight, and inconsistent, Harrison was squeezed.
    Crazy either/or stat:
Giants are 14-1 when opposition scores 3 or fewer runs
Giants are 1-16 when opposition scores 4 or more runs
The answer: hold opposition to 3 or fewer runs! Better pitching is on its way!

    1. For the most part, gonna be hard to get better SP....The offense needs to score more runs plain and simple...One sign of that is that the three runs and six hits yesterday almost seemed like an explosion! if the teamwide hitting approach under Burrel isn't the issue (I don't know wither way) then If the existing players can't improve and get it done, help needs to be brought in from the farm or elsewhere before too long..

On the flip side, Harrison has great stuff and is also learning to pitch in difficult situations..Kid is going to be a horse!! And gotta love what WAKER and MILLER are doing...Miller blowing a 100 mph FB by the SOX player for punch out was beautiful to see!

    2. Anyone know what Burrell's approach or hitting philosophy is? The at bats look really lost and our guys should be better than this. At least a little better!

    3. Several Sacramento SP's are ready to play including Mason Black and perhaps Carson Seymour and Spencer Howard.
And then there's Snell this month, Alex Cobb and Robbie Ray later, and another perhaps: Tristan Beck.
Jefferies will have to prove himself. Look for Black sooner than later, perhaps in Colorado -- usually a tough place to start but Rox are not good.

    4. Not sure what Pat the Bat's coaching philosophy is but as a player he always sold out for power.

  3. Of course you pinch hit the RH Flores batting .236 for the LH Wade who has 2 hits and is batting .333 because it's the metrics
