Game Wrap 5/22/2024: Giants 9 Pirates 5(10 innings)

The Giants turned the tables on the Pirates coming back from a 5-0 deficit to win in extra innings.  Key Lines:

Luis Matos CF- 2 for 6. BA= .325.  Matos was 0 for 4 when he came up with 2 outs in the 9'th inning and the Giants trailing by a run.  He singled, took 2B on an error by Bryan Reynlds(yes, THAT Bryan Reynolds!) and scored on a single by Lamonte Wade Jr.  Matos later drove in the final run of the game to cap the 10'th inning rally.

Lamonte Wade Jr 1B- 3 for 3,  3 BB.  BA= .336.  LMWJ reaches base 6 times.  He's quietly turned himself into one of the elite hitters in MLB.

Matt Chapman 3B- 1 for 3, HR(7), 2 BB.  BA= .245.  Chapman's HR with LMWJ on board closed the margin to 5-3 in the 6'th inning.  He's batting .480 over his last 7 games.

Patrick Bailey C- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .295.  Bailey's first start since coming off the concussion IL shows how valuable he is to the lineup.

Jorge Soler DH- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .213.  Giants need Soler to find some traction.

Blake Snell LHP- 3.1 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 11.40.   More of the same from Snell.  I guess facing MLB hitters is not the same as A and AAA?  3 of his runs scored on a grand slam HR by Bryan Reynolds(yes, THAT Bryan Reynolds!) give up by Sean Hjelle, but still an awful start by Snell threw over 60 pitches in his first 3 innings and ended with 87.

Randy Rodriguez RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.53.  Another electric appearance by Randy who was one of the few prospects FZ has protected from the Rule 5 Draft.

Tyler Rogers RHP, Ryan Walker RHP and Camilo Doval RHP pitched a scoreless inning each.

The Dodgers trail the D'Backs 6-0 but as of this writing the Giants sit 8.5 games behind the Dodgers and 1 game behind the final Wild Card playoff spot.

The Giants try for a series win facing the sensational Paul Skenes RHP with TBD starting for the Giants.

Churn Watch:

Nick Avila RHP was optioned to AAA Sacramento to make way for Blake Snell's return from the IL.

  1. i'm trying to resist the idea of a bullpen game where snell pitches in a bulk innings role but, if i don't see improvement out of snell. we may have to go back to resorting to bullpen games out of necessity.

  2. My friend who is a padres fan said that Snell is a notoriously slow starter. He signed late adding to that but thinks he'll put it together. Gotta be patient. Nice to see Chapman on a hot streak. One of their stated goals was to improve the defense so Chapman should prove to be a good signing.on that alone. What a play he made on Joey Barts hard grounder down the 3rd base line in the 10th inning to end the game. Highlight reel stuff! Patrick Bailey s emergence softens the blow of losing Joey Bart. Looks like the pirates are a better situation for him with Yasmani Grandal signed for only 1 year.and Henry Davis in AAA .I bet teams are lining up hoping the Giants trade Randy Rodriguez. Do you think he'll be a high leverage arm before the end of the season?

    1. Looks like Joey Bart gave the Giants a gut punch with the grand salami today. Good for him. I wonder what made the pirates manager start him. Bart usually catches twice a week. I guess once the Giants signed Murphy Bart was gone.

  3. Snell was very confident in his post game interview.
At least the Giants didn't lose his start, the first time that has happened.
SF batters left a collective 26 runners on base led by Estrada (7), Ramos (5), and YtY (4), all except a late hit by Ramos were hitless along with Luciano and his pinchhitter. That hasn't been working.

    1. Not sure what you mean by "this hasn't been working". Estrada leads the team in HR's. Ramos and Luciano have been quite good at the plate, not so good in one game. What "hasn't been working?"

    2. all the guys in your post are fine and will help all season...EXCEPT Snell, who at his best is a "five and dive" pitcher with 2 good seasons out of 8

    4. Pinchhitting hasn't been working.
Except 1-3 today in the come back

  4. Things often work out in baseball: SF wins a game they should have lost (down 5 runs early) and lost one they should have won (up 4 late).

  5. Great come from behind win after the gut punch and bullpen meltdown the night before..Those type of games are sometimes hard to shake, but the Giants did. Except for one pitch from Hjelle, great bounce back from the Bullpen and Rodrigues and his stuff looks like a keeper.. Won't worry about SNell yet, but would be nice to get in 6 decent inning with some semeblance of order and command.

Whether it's a hot streak or Chapman rediscovering the old magic for good, great to see him hitting and dropping bombs. Giants need that desperately with SOLER not providing what he was paid for. OTOH, he's hitting better with more ABs so maybe the HRs come soon?? Not much more to be said about WADE this season, a hitting on OB machine!

Opener today? Black? Did they sneak somebody up from SAC (ROUPP?)?
