Game Wrap 5/29/2024: Phillies 6 Giants 1

This is going to be short:  The Giants righthanded leaning lineup struggled against a young LHP and the Giants young LHP struggled against one of the best lineups in MLB.

Key LineHeliot Ramos LF- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .292.  Luis Matos has cooled off and Marco Luciano is lost on defense but Heliot Ramos continues to put together solid PA's and play within himself.

Not much else to see here.

The Loss dropped the Giants to 6.5 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West but they remained in second place in the race for 3 Wild Card playoff spots by percentage points ahead of the Padres.

The Giants get a much-needed day off at home to regroup and the face the Yankees over the weekend with Jordan Hicks RHP taking the mound Friday night against TBD.

Even when your team wins 10 of 12 games, taking a loss is hard, specially when your guys don't seem to put up much of an effort.
Reflection might make you wonder how this team could have won the 10: 2 of the top 3 in the lineup have an on-base % of .270 & .274 and your 5 & 6 are anemic (OPS+ of 89 & 74).
    Bring on the Yankees!
Giants will throw Hicks, Webb, and Snell and win them all!

  2. Luis Matos is at another Negative fWAR figure at -0.2. Now I know his defense is much improved from the start of the season, but if the defense is replacement level at best -- there is a lot lot lot riding on his bat.

While I have some irrational faith that the offensive numbers will turn around I'm now wondering if there is regular every day player in there for 2023. I understand he needs to develop but it's possible this might be a repeat of 2022 for Matos.

    1. Several things here: 1. Is a small sample. 2. Matos does not strike out much but also does not walk much which hurts him a LOT in the fWAR calculation. 3. Don't forget that as recently as the Dodger series Matos looked completely lost in CF so that is going to drag down the defensive portion of the WAR calculation. 4. He's still on a pretty steep learning curve at the MLB level. Matos still has a lot to prove but I wouldn't write him off just yet.
