The Giants offensive futility continued but they didn't pitch well. Key Lines:
Mike Yastrzemski RF- 1 for 3. BA= .233. Michael Conforto LF drew a 2-out walk in the 4'th inning. Thairo Estrada 2B doubled him to 3B. YtY then squeeze bunted in a situation where he had to get a hit for the run to count. He got it done. That, my friends, takes some.....ahem.....fortitude! What's a little disturbing here is he must have thought he had a better chance to beat out a bunt hit and drive in the single run than he did to hit a 3-run HR and give the Giants a multi-run lead.
Tom Murphy C- 1 for 3, HR(1). BA= .100. Maybe Murph is turning over a new leaf with the new month? He sure had a dreadful April! I still think he will turn out to be a good signing by the end of the season.
Erik Miller LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K. ERA= 5.14. Miller was the Opener and got the job done, but I still don't understand why, if Jefferies is the bulk innings guy why you don't just start him.
Daulton Jeffries RHP- 2.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 17.36. I do hope the next time the Giants need to reach into their depth for a starting pitcher, it's Mason Black.
The Loss will likely drop the Giants 5 games behind the Dodgers and leave them in 3'rd place in the NL West as the Dodgers lead the D'Backs 8-0 in the 8'th inning of their game. The Padres are 0.5 games ahead of the Giants.
Kyle Harrison LHP tries to avert a sweep tomorrow facing Josh Winckowski RHP and who are these Red Sox pitchers who are shutting the Giants down? Oh wait! I guess that's not all that hard to do.
Doc I feel your frustrations about the Giants not hitting this season. I don't know if you've drawn any firm conclusions about the offense yet? I have some negative thoughts about the hitting, myself but think it's too early to draw any firm conclusions. Baggs came up with an incredible stat about Solar coming up to bat this season with 90 runners on base and driving in only 3 of them. That's incredible and should turn around right? What could happen is the hitting gets better and the pitching slumps, that's baseball. I always thought Andrew Bailey was a good pitching coach for the Giants, but the Red Sox starting pitchers have the best era in MLB. 2.59. then again that's probably not sustainable over the entire season.
ReplyDeleteI have to say I am not particularly optimistic about the hitting. Looking down the stat list, it looks to me like most of the hitters are performing about as expected. Maybe some room for positive regression from Thairo Estrada and Austin Slater, but how much difference would that make in overall run production. I'm just not seeing that player or players who will catch fire and carry the team on a long winning streak. Add in very a very spotty bullpen and the pressure the combination of low run scoring and a shaky bullpen put on the SP's and I am afraid we may be looking at another long season.
DeleteDoc you might be right. I think success will depend on the Giants having enough players who have good maybe even career years instead of down years.
DeleteThe Faithful is perplexed!
ReplyDeleteThere are 5 teams doing quite well in the NL with just 2 games separating them.
There are 2 teams winning 1 out of 4 (or less) who have single digit wins and aren't likely to get better.
Then there are the 8 other teams separated by just 2½ games with the Giants in the midst of that 8.
Team batting averages and OPS? Giants are in the middle.
Team pitching stinks but most of the bad is in fewer than half the staff: there is the good and there is the bad. System pitching is supposed to be good so why are there so many inept pitching? The excuse is the 40-man roster. Well, that's fixable, isn't it?
It's still early to panic but it's not too early to lose the Faithful.
And the fanbase.
The lineup is as gruesome as it gets...Matt Chapman hitting .225 with and OBP of .265 was expected..it is what he is...AHmed, though some early success, is regressing back down to his norm of , say, .230/.270..One can take that from your #9 hitter but not your cleanup hitter! The two big ones dragging the team down are Soler and Estrada with sub .230 AVE and sub .260 OBP... These two will get better right?...THe others in the lineup are marginally better but as a whole making the Giants a breeze to pitch against.....I also watch the team at the plate and I really wonder about their batting eyes and pitch selection...Maybe why their team OBP is like 12th in the NL (but still better than a few teams)..
ReplyDeleteBut what can they do or will they do?. Schmidt/Wisely/Luciano in the IF? Ramos in the OF? .Likely just wait and wait and hope patience is rewarded...
Two related things have become obvious this season...The good one is that the Giants have really good and young SP depth which will be even more accentuated when Beck, Cobb and Ray come back from injuries..I also think that it's obvious that some of these young SP, and maybe including one of the better ones, will have to be dealt for a Young bat..gotta give to get..
And can we end the Daulton Jeffries experiment? as well the Dumpster Dive Churn of Mitch White?

I would add Jorge Soler to the list of players who should improve. Most projections have his OPS between .755 and .790. More importantly he has been horrible with runners in scoring position. Last tear he had 75 RBI. This year he has only 8 with a little less than 20% of the season olayed. Derald Cook
