Game Wrap 5/14/2024: Dodgers 10 Giants 2

Keaton Winn once again looked good for three innings before falling apart in the fourth, this time exiting the game with an apparent injury in the 5'th inning.  By that time it was all over but the shouting as the saying goes.  Key Lines:

Mike Yastrzemski RF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .212.   2 hits tonight but batting just .182 over his last 7 games and his last 15 games.  The two hits did not figure into the scoring.

Heliot Ramos LF- 1 for 4.  BA= .320.  Ramos drove in 1 of the Giants 2 runs and continues to be a bright spot since his call up,

Luis Matos CF- 2 for 4.  BA= .250.  Matos drove in the Giants other run.  He also committed an error in CF and generally continued to look lost out there.   Giants need to find someone who can defend CF.

Casey Schmitt SS- 2 for 4.  BA= .158.  Maybe this will get Schmitt going?  With these two hits he is 3 for 19 with 0 BB since his call up.

Randy Rodriguez RHP- 3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.52.  More electric stuff from Randy who should be seeing more high leverage work pretty soon.

Nick Avila RHP- 2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 9.31.  I've been as intrigued as anyone by Avila's work in the minors but he looked like he was pitching batting practice to the Dodgers on mop up time.

The Giants fall 10 games off the Dodgers pace in the NL West but remain just 2.5 games out of the final Wild Card playoff spot.

Logan Webb RHP tries to get the Giants their first win of the season over the Dodgers tomorrow evening.

Churn Watch:

More bad news on the injury front.  We noted Keaton Winn's early exit in the intro.

Not surprisingly, Jung Hoo Lee's MRI showed structural damage to his left shoulder.  He'll get a second opinion from Dr Neil El Attrache which likely means he's been advised to have surgery which would likely end his season.

Patrick Bailey C went back on the concussion list and Marco Luciano SS was recalled from AAA Sacramento prior to tonight's game.

And finallly Jorge Soler DH was taking batting practice before tonight's game and a foul ball ricocheted off the batting cage and hit him in the back of the head.  Yikes! What is going on?

  1. i think short term it's back to teng, i think they want get black's arm strength up more before bringing him back. maybe for winn's next turn, they go bullpen game with teng in the bulk innings role.

    1. another possibility is moving lee to the 60-day to clear a space for tommy romero if they want black to work up his pitch count

    2. I was going to say I think Romero or Spencer Howard may get a look here.

  2. CF needs to be addressed with JHL probably done for the season. Perhaps Yaz should see some innings out there. I recall him playing some decent CF out there.. though his bat needs to get going.

C is also something to keep an eye on. As much as I like Sabol, his defensive limitations are very apparent. Airmailing a few throws to second and the Reds got 5 SBs on him on Sunday.

    1. Didn't Matos win like a Golden Glove or some fielding award in the minors? I thought that was strength of his at one point. Sure isn't translating at the MLB level if it is!

  3. Pavs tweeted Winn has "forearm tightness" yikes MRI tomorrow. Maybe we'll see Mason Black. Maybe this is part of the reason he was sent down, so he can start games in case a situation like this arises. It'll be interesting to see how the young hitters do this time led by Ramos.Pat Burrell worked with these young hitters a lot when he was a Giants Minor league hitting coach.. Former major leaguer and Sacramento color man Steve Sax likes Heliot Ramos and thinks he's ready to show what he can do if given an opportunity.

  4. Entering the season pre-Snell, I thought the Giants were dead in the water if they had to depend too much on young/converted pitches becasue of inexperience/inconsistencies, likely injuries, pitch/ inning count..The signing of Snell eased that concern a little and boy isn't he desperately needed to help the Giants from completely fading into Bolivian..

Of course, this has now been minimized a bit compared to the rash of injuries to the position and the incompetence of most of the vets in the lineup.

I don't know how this season doesn't continue to spiral down the drain. The only hope is too watch kids play, struggle and grow. That said, you need to play vets like FLores, Yaz, Soler, Ahmed, whoever with the hope that somehow they right themselves and a contender may give up something for them before the deadline(Chapman is a lost cause, nobody wanted him, nobody will want him). Ditto with the pitchers, anybody would be fair game except Webb (his performance and contract are too good), Hicks .

Hard to find the bright spots but we must keep trying like the Giants are (right?).

  5. This is what happens when you sign a bunch or scrubs and roll through with one of the worst rosters in the league. Obviously we all agree that Farhan needs to do what he’s never done before: sell everyone he can except Webb basically. Yes, even sell Doval, he’s going to be due for an increase in pay soon and he’s not going to be worth it. 6 years in and nothing to show for it but a train wreck comparable to the A’s

  6. You gotta chill on Randy Rodriguez. He’s got bad minor league numbers. BAD. Wheels are going to fall off. He’s got bad ERA’s and bad WHIP and walks a lot of people. He’s only been on the Giants 40 man roster because he was protected from rule 5 draft years ago because he through fast and one good season in the lower minors. He’s absolutely scuffled in AA and AAA. If this is the guy you think should be in high leverage situations Doc….that must mean we have the type of ball club that’s going to be competing for the #1 pick in the amateur draft next year

  7. Why not play Fitz in Cf, move Matos to right and Ramos to left? This assumes Yaz stays as utility since he’s not shown much. Luc and Schmitt can man SS (and give Chapman a break— I think Casey could benefit from mentorship).

  8. I as a generally a longterm fan of the Zaidi admin. Am just going to let out a collective scream of frustration at how the organization is looking in general.

  9. Only 2.5 games out of wild card spot … there’s still time.

  10. It is time for Webb to step up to his billing as #1 SF starting pitcher.
A good defense would help, but let's hope it's at least adequate.
Although 0-5 against their rivals, the Giants contended in 3 of the games losing by 1 run in the first 2 encounters and carried a led in the 4th game, with a chance to win it in 9.
It will be difficult especially if LA gets the ball into the air, but a tight game can benefit the home team: play good defense and pray a lot when the ball is in the air, especially deep to CF.
The Giants lack of depth is hurting them: it's time for veterans like Chapman, Estrada, YtY, and CURT CASALI to step up!
And pray no liners to CF.
