Game Wrap 5/12/2024: Giants 6 Reds 5(10 innings)

Kyle Harrison gave up a 3-spot in the first inning and labored through 5 but the Giants lineup picked him up with a 5-spot of their own in the 5'th inning to set up a walk-off win in extra innings.  Key Lines:

Lamonte Wade Jr 1B- 1 for 3, HR(2), 2 BB.  BA= .340.  LMWJ has the 8'th highest BA among MLB hitters with at least 100 PA's and is #1 in OBP.  His 2 run HR in the pivotal 5'th inning tied the game.

Heliot Ramos LF- 2 for 5.  BA= .294.  Heliot is vindicating the fans who have been advocating for him.  He has definitely provided an injection of energy into a struggling team.

Kyle Harrison LHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 5 BB, 5 K.  BA= 3.42.  Credit to Harrison for not folding his tent after a near disastrous first inning.  Although the lineup provided him with a chance to record a W, I am sure he is very happy with the ND and team win.

Camilo Doval RHP- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.60.  Doval sometimes does not perform well in non-save situation but his work here helped extend the game to give his team a chance to win.

Luke Jackson RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K.  ERA= 3.24.  Leaving the "ghost runner" stranded in the top of an extra-inning is huge.

Casey Schmitt SS drove in the walk-off winning run with a ground-rule double in the bottom of the 10'th.

The Giants gained a game on the first place Dodgers at 8.0 games behind. They remain 2.5 games behind the Padres for the last Wild Card playoff spot.

Jordan Hicks RHP faces the Dodgers tomorrow in the first game of a 3-game series with Gavin Stone RHP going for the Hated Ones.   A word of warning:  Stone has allowed just 3 ER in 20 IP over his last 3 starts.

Churn Watch

Brett Wisely UT was called up to replace Austin Slater who went on the concussion IL.

Not unexpectedly, Michael Conforto OF went on the 10-day IL with a hammy strain.  Luis Matos OF was called up from AAA Sacramento to replace him.  Unfortunately, Matos has struggled in AAA to a .218 BA so far..

No sooner had Jung Hoo Lee OF returned to action after fouling a ball of his foot on Wednesday in Coors Field but he dislocated his left shoulder after trying to make heroic catch of Jeimer Candelario's 3-run double in the first inning today.  Not good!

  1. lee's injury is suddenly going to force FZ to look for rental outfielders on the the trade route. jazz chisholm may the best rental option out there. in the short term, luciano is likely getting the nod with them signing a scrap heap free agent outfielder to be a warm body in sacramento.

  2. Lee's injury took away from a great win. Hope for a good prognosis with his injury. He plays all out which makes him susceptible to injury but fun to watch. Ramos has impressed defensively and he's having good abs. Please give him more playing time. Maybe Pat Burrell can work with Matos on his hitting and fix him.. He worked with Matos a lot when he was a minor league hitting coach. Happy for Casey Schmidt getting the game winning hit! I'm a fan. The Reds pitcher threw him 4 straight sliders, the count was 0-2, then he hits a ground rule double on a fastball right down the middle. a pleasant surprise! Isn't Solar coming back soon? Too many injuries to keep up with.

  3. Options for outfield:
Now that Jung Ho Lee and Michael Conforto are on the IL, what is the OF going to look like?
Lamont Wade has played outfield plenty although mostly left field (2021- 80 games in the OF, 2022 45 games in OF, 2023-22 games). I would put him out in left. He can also play 1B or DH. He should be in the lineup every day.
Heliot Ramos looks like he can play either LF or RF. Keep him on the field every day. Looks like he should be in RF.
Yaz is such a good fielder and has played plenty in CF.
Backups should be Tyler Fitzgerald (although he may get the bulk of time in CF) and Luis Matos. There should be plenty of chances for them to get ABs.
For the hitting to score runs, Wilmer Flores needs to hit better than he has. If he continues to struggle, put Lamont at first.
At least they have some options despite the injuries.
The Dodger series will be important to see if these guys can produce.Winning at least 2 out of 3 would be huge. First two game will be a challenge with Stone and Yamamoto pitching.

    1. Winning 1 out of 3 would be huge, 2 out of 3 would be Gi-ant-ic!
Ohtani's back problem may be advantage for Giants. He came out of Saturday's game and didn't play Sunday.
Even without Ohtani (11 HRs) they still have Betts, Freeman, Smith, and Hernandez (11 hrs, tied with Ohtani).
Solid pitching AND LUCK could win...

  4. Injuries to Conforto and Lee will test the depth and young talent that FZ should have been building the last 3-4 years...But, have to admit, it's a lot of injuries right now..Run with Ramos every game....I wish there was an OF prospect with some pop!

Wade has been amazing. and not a clean day from Harrison but can the kid battle and not fold!

So much pressure on the starting pitchers but it is what it is and they need to answer the bell...hopefully with SNELL!

Even without the injuries, it's obvious the Giants will eventually have to trade one or more of their better (best???) young SP for young help in the field.

  5. Let’s not get too excited about Ramos yet fellas. He’s shown he’s capable of producing in small sample sizes. He’s the type of player who will start off hot for 100 at bats and then disappear and struggle mightily for his next 200-300 at bats.

    1. I think we are all smart enough here to know Ramos is far from a sure thing. He is a former first round draft pick and has shown enough to be given serious chance which is more than an occasional pinch hit/defensive replacement/ride the shuttle back to Sac.
