Game Wrap 8/3/2016: Phillies 5 Giants 4 in 12 innings

The Giants took a 4-0 lead into the 7'th inning only to lose it and and later the game.  Key Lines:

Denard Span- 3 for  6, 2B.  BA= .260.  Span came into the game hitting .182 over his last 7 games.

Buster Posey- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .291.  Buster came into the game hitting .240 over his last 7 games,  but now is 7 for 16 over his last 4.

Conor Gillaspie- 2 for 4.   BA= .265.  Bochy said he won't forget about Conor Gillaspie and gave him the start over Nunez.  Why did the Giants trade for Nunez again?  You can take that question any way you want.

Eduardo Nunez- 0 for 2, E(13).  BA= .290.  Nunez came in on a double switch.  In the bottom of the 12'th, with runners at first and second, he bobbled a slow chopper off the bat of Aaron Altherr while looking at 2B then threw wildly to 1B way too late although Belt caught it to prevent further damage.  Nunez took a Error, although I'm not convinced he would have gotten either Hernandez at 2B or Altherr at 1B as both of those guys can fly.  But my goodness!  Nunez came from the Twins with statistically league average defense per Fangraphs.  Man, I hope this does not turn out like another Shea Hillenbrand, Ryan Garko or Casey McGehee!

Johnny Cueto- 7.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 10 K's.  ERA= 2.73.  Cueto was dominant until he gave up dingers to Howard and Rupp in the 7'th and 2 more runs in the 8'th.

The bullpen was game until they finally ran out of ready arms in the 12'th and had to turn to Jake Peavy with runners already on base.  You knew how THAT was going to turn out, right?

Dodgers got shelled by the Rockies 12-2 so the Giants maintain their 2 game lead in the NL West, but the Rockies are suddenly just 7 games out and back in the race.

Matt Moore makes his Giants debut tomorrow afternoon. He will try to avoid the sweep facing Vince Velasquez.

  1. Why want Cueto pulled earlier? He finally got pulled after giving up the lead at 112 pitches. With the tying run on 2 with your starter approaching 110 pitches, why not go for a fresh arm?

    1. I wasn't watching during that time, so I can't really say, but 112 pitches is not an excessive number.

    2. Bryce is right. It was a pathetic showing by Bochy. It was obvious even listening to the game that Cueto couldn't handle the trouble & Smith was ready in the pen. After the tying runs had already come around, Bochy trots out and brings in Smith, who promptly K's the next two batters.

A FEW MINUTES LATE, EH BOCH?? Skipper is asleep at the wheel and the Giants needed this game. Really really disappointed in this particular lots, with Cueto being an ace through 8 innings, and then being allowed to scuffle and sputter on his own as the Phillies slapped him around. Friggin terrible management, and I'm a HEAVY Bochy supporter/apologist!

    3. After he gave up the 2 dingers in the 7'th, I probably would have taken out Cueto after the first baserunner he allowed in the 8'th.

    4. That's the thing. It's not like Cueto gunned down the Phils the inning before. He wanted to go back out and was under 100 pitches, ok. But if you're letting him work extra to save the pen, a two run game isn't the one to do it in.

    5. Based on what Cueto has done so far this year, it was perfectly reasonable for Bochy to leave him in. Most managers would have.

  2. I went to bed in the 11th inning. 4-4. Sigh.

  3. DrB do you think there is any possibility that they bring up Arroyo if Nunez continues his retched defense? Gillespie is fine, but he is not the future and I would rather see the kid if I am going to see this kind of defense and write it off to gaining experience. The Duffy trade may be our undoing if Moore can't be what we need him to be.

    1. Anything is possible, but I believe the Giants don't want to bring up Arroyo this season.

  4. Totally agree with Doc on Arroyo. Not only do they not want to bring him up, he's not ready. He's not hitting where Duffy (.330+) or Tomlinson (.320+) either one were when they left the EL. He's probably going to need some time in AAA for at least part of next season unless he absolutely tears it up in Spring Training.

I get that they're saying he's the 3B of the future, but it's not the immediate future. He's still got some work to do both offensively and defensively (as he showed tonight when he almost sailed a throw into the stands in the bottom of the 10th in Altoona. The Squirrels lost.).

We have plenty of adequate options at 3B. Nunez made a good play today at 3B. He's not going to screw up every time.

Shoot, even Craw muffed a play today that could have easily been scored an error. Baseball happens. Nunez just happened to make a couple errors on the heels of our beloved Matt Duffy's departure.

Gillespie hasn't played a horrible 3B, and watching Tomlinson in Sacto, he's even better than Gill.

Arroyo's gonna get there, no doubt, but no need to rush it.
