The Giants finally made the move that's been staring them in the face for at least 2 weeks and called up Mac Williamson. Mac made it pay off immediately with a 3-run HR in the 4'th inning to lead a withering offensive attack in Coor's Field. Key Lines:
Joe Panik 2B- 3 for 6. BA= .224. Joe has a an 8 game hit streak and is hitting .323 over his last 7 games.
Brandon Belt 1B- 2 for 5, 2 2B. BA= .229. Despite the .229 BA, Belt's OBP is .343 and his OPS is .809, .002 less than his career average.
Evan Longoria 3B- 2 for 3, HR(5), 2 BB. BA= .235. Longo is hitting .318 over his last 7 games and .280 over his last 15.
Mac Williamson LF- 2 for 4, HR(1), BB. BA= .500. I've said this before many times. The Giants single biggest need this offseason, through spring training and now is a LF who can mash with 30+ HR's, preferably one who hits RH. There was always 1 guy in the organization, and just one, who had shown the potential to be that. I am happy Mac finally got the call, and I am deliriously happy he delivered big time in his first game back, but he should have been the LF on Opening Day. Zaidi says he's going to get an extended shot with regular playing time. I'm guessing he just bought himself a longer look with this performance.
Brandon Crawford SS- 2 for 4, BB. BA= .221. Crawford is hitting .280 over his last 7 games.
Kevin Pillar CF- 1 for 4, HR(6). BA= .197. Pillar continues to make the few hits he gets count big time. Amazingly, in spite of the spectacular catches and 6 dingers, Pillar has negative offensive and defensive fWAR's. IDK, I might go with the eye test on this one.
Tyler Austin PH- 1 for 1, 3B. BA= .314. Austin is a curious case. He's hit pretty well since the Giants traded for him, albeit without much power. He doesn't really have a place to play as he's not going to unseat Brandon Belt at 1B and and elbow injury has slowed his transition to LF. At this point he's a RH bat off the bench, which isn't nothing.
Madison Bumgarner LHP- 6 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 8 K's. ERA= 3.99. Bummy seems to be getting his mojo back. There have been several stories speculating on his trade value. I'm tellin' ya. Mac is going to see to it the Giants are buyers at the trade deadline. California Dreaming!

Two critical doubles by Belt that spearheaded two rallies. Each were with two outs and nobody on.
ReplyDeleteAustin Slater had a near full year @ 2B in 2015 (96 games with Richmond and San Jose), so he must know how to turn a DP. Could he be worse than Panik and Solarte? He's playing LF + 3 IF positions this year at Sacramento. He's slashing .319/.402/.520 in nearly 200 AAA games. His limited MLB numbers aren't bad.
ReplyDeleteMore Baseball-Reference madness (?): Longoria has moved to #1 among 2019's Giants!
Yes..it looks like the Giants are trying to turn Slater into a Utility man..not a bad idea with Williamson, Gerber(?), Shaw, Heyward and Quinn..
ReplyDeleteGlad to see Mac's final shot began with a Bang..They say they are Committed to him now and will give him a one more long look..I hope that's true and he doesn't have to be "perfect"..but they said the same about Reed, Joe and Gerber....and look how quickly the Giants lost patience and they were yanked... Farhan has kinda created a "produce quick or be gone" environment for these kids..not the best
Good stuff from Belt, Panik and Longo..be nice to really get POSEY hot, if that's possible..
Austin has done a decent job as a bat off the bench but was that why assets were spent on him...Maybe 1B will open up later in the season? :)

If Z could get something for Belt I'm sure he would try and move him.
ReplyDeleteBryce Harper update for Phillies: tied for 2nd in HRs with 7, WAR 0.2, dWAR -0.5, (Baseball-Reference).
ReplyDeletePeaked?
And it looked for all the world that the Mac "ship had sailed" when DFA'd. This comeback looks exactly like last year's call-up. The MAC storyline is the best reason to follow this team. Our team is starved for power and home-grown talent to boot.
ReplyDeleteAt this moment, only Longoria and Pillar are not home grown.
ReplyDeleteIs this good or bad? Or both?
If we can get a game with Sandoval at third and Slater in the OF, it would be a lineup to remember. Might not win, but memorable. For something.
Cincinnati is not the same team HOME and ROAD: 9-8 and 6-14.
Score > 5.5 runs per game at home, 3.1 on the road.
5-12 in 1-run games.
Better against LHP -- won't see Holland if game Thursday doesn't get rained out, hopefully not Pomeranz, either.
Could be Rodriguez, Samardzija, and Bumgarner, but, alas, Pomeranz will probably get in there and get pounded. Again.
Giants should save him for the first Toronto game, he did very well last time.
