Tyler Beede pitched the first Quality Start of his major league career to hold the Marlins at bay long enough for the Giants to score 3 late runs for a come-from-behind win. Key Lines:
Brandon Crawford SS- 2 for 4, 2 2B, BA= .215. Didn't Crawford have a big June last year? Maybe he is finally getting some traction at the plate? Hitting .240 over his last 7 games and 5 for 11 in his last 3.
Tyler Beede RHP- 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 7/2. ERA= 7.82. Wow! The ERA tells you. how rough it's been for Beede before today. Beede had all is stuff working today relying on a mid-90's FB to set up a nasty changeup with 2-seam movement for one strikeout pitch and a tight hard curveball for another. If the Giants can succesfully establish Beede in the starting rotation this year, it will go a long way toward building the next good Giants team, after he looked like another first round bust last year.

Sad to hear news that the wife of the Giants new head of amateur scouting, Michael Holmes, has passed away at the age of 45 of breast cancer. Schulman's story in the Chron says that the team's draft duties are being split between John Barr and Brian Bridges. Apparently, Holmes had been given time away from the team before his wife's death on Wednesday. A very decent thing for Zaidi and company to do, considering how important this draft will be in turning this club's fortunes around. But it's the right call.
ReplyDeleteFor the game, top of the lineup was 0-12 against the young Marlin pitcher.
ReplyDeleteWith just 6 hits, Giants managed to bunch enough together with walks to score the 3 runs.
For all the grief piled upon the "core" Posey, Belt, Crawford, and Longoria figured significantly in all the scoring, such as it was.
Question: has Chris Shaw at 25 been given up on?
The Giants @ .400 pct. are ahead of the .377 that would yield 101 losses, the most in their entire history, hardly a great send off for a future HOF manager!
ReplyDeleteTrading off Bumgarner early with more regular season starts left (~ 21 at this point) might get SF more in return than waiting until he has half that many at the end of July -- the TRUE end of trades for 2019 with NO August waiver deals allowed now.
However, trading anyone of value including their 13 of 13 saves closer or the capable setup guys, increases the likelihood of more losses, and the earlier even more losses.
Many are calling for DFAing some (or all?) of the "core" and using fresh faces who at this point are not as good: surely more losses.
Whether the Giants could fall to the Oriole level (potential 112 losses) and get 1st pick is problematic, but it is possible if they denude themselves entirely of those who are not part of future success and might bring something worthwhile, such as Joe Panik or Austin or Sandoval each of whom could add a couple wins in the rest of the season.
Trading and DFAing could very well help the future but such is certainly going to tarnish Bruce Bochy's finale!
Would the FO consider that?
Will Zaidi torpedo Bochy?
