Game Wrap 5/22/2019: Braves 9 Giants 2

Jeff Samardzija was charged with a throwing error when nobody covered second base on a potential GIDP comebacker.  That miscue led to 6 unearned runs for the Braves in the second inning and ruined what could have been a scoreless Quality Start and possibly a Win.  Key Lines:

Tyler Austin 1B- 1 for 2, HR(3), BB.  BA= .255.  There is some toonder in Austin's bat.  3 dingers in 63 PA projects to just under 30/600.  Has he been working on tracking fly balls in LF?

Jeff Samardzija RHP- 6 IP, 4 H, 6 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 3.27.  See intro above.

Derek Holland LHP- 3 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 7.30.  It's another ugly line, but I'm going to look for the silver lining and ask if maybe Holland found something in the scoreless 8'th and 9'th innings?

The Dodgers actually lost a game, so the Giants remain 10 games behind them in the NL West.  The real race to look at, though is the Wild Card and the Giants dropped 5 games off the pace there.

Madison Bumgarner tries for a series split tomorrow facing RHP Kevin Gausman.

Forgot to mention that LHP Travis Bergen was place on the IL with....ahem....a shoulder strain.  The move made room for Donovan Solano to return to the Active Roster and give the Giants 4 position players on the bench.

  1. Responding to a post yesterday about guys with value -

I would keep Gott, he's under control for like 4 more years. Can flip him in the future, or be a part of the pen when we are contending again.

Smith, Watson, Dyson - move all 3, hopefully Smith can bring back a pretty good prospect.

Shark - if he pitches well enough to move it's a big win off our cap.

Panik - didn't think he would be a trade piece but if he stays hot...

    Panda - see above

Bum - sucks to see him go but probably our only chance at a top end prospect.

Also there's a good chance this is a buyer's market which hurts us. AL is basically decided already -going to be a ton of sellers with few buyers

    1. I agree with keeping Gott -- that's the kind of player you would trade FOR in a rebuild, not trade away. I think Bumgarner stays until the last minute in July a) to keep some butts in seats and b) build up a bidding frenzy approaching the deadline. At least until after the draft when someone finally signs Keuchel. They need Yaztremski up - he's 10000 seats a game just for the name in the lineup.

  2. After the next 13 games -- which will be difficult enough for the Giants -- the hard schedule begins. Can they make it to .500 by then? 10-3? With 9 on the road?
If not, is Baseball-Refernece right with Playoff Odds: 0.0% to make postseason, 0.0% to win World Series?
    End of California Dreaming?
Shouldn't those with trade value be the ones playing -- including Sandoval? Can any of the high-cost players even be "given away" for lottery picks just to unload loads of salary?
Does Casey Stengel's 1962 question about the Mets apply?
