Game Wrap 5/25/2019: D'Backs 10 Giants 4

If last night's game was like a tsunami of runs washing over the Giants in wave after wave, this one was more like the rising waters of a midwest river in the spring.  It didn't quite have the same feeling of a beatdown but after a 4 spot in the 5'th innings it was suddenly a 10-1 deficit.  Game over.  The Giants put up a 3-spot of their own in the 7'th inning to make the score closer than the game actually was.  Key Lines:

Andrew Suarez LHP- 4 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 3 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 9.00.  Suarez didn't have either great stuff or  great command and the result was a rough Start.  Tough to see where Suarez goes from here.  He's needs better pitches or better command or both.  Not sure where/how he finds that.  Maybe spend some time with the Driveline guy?

Dereck Rodriguez RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 4.81.  Baby steps for DRod.
The secondary stats are not particularly encouraging here.  Maybe he can pitch long relief for awhile and pull his game together?

Mike Yastrzemski LF- 0 for 3, HBP.  BA= .000.   Kind cool to see the grandson of a legend from my childhood make his MLB debut.  It went about the way you would expect from a guy who was playing in his fourth AAA season and put up some shiny stats in an already extreme hitter's league paying with a juiced ball.  If the Giants want their hitting prospects to stop doing faceplants when they are called up, they might want to lobby whoever needs to be lobbied to change the ball back in the PCL or else move their AAA affiliate to the International League.

It's probably a moot issue where this Loss leaves the Giants in the standings.  Needless to say, they did not gain any ground.

Shaun Anderson tries to be a Stopper tomorrow afternoon but is facing a hot pitcher in Luke Weaver.

Mac got the DFA ax and Trevor Gott hit the 10 day IL with a forearm strain to make room for Yaz the Younger and DRod.  I know folks are saying Mac had his chance.  He did look lost at the plate so I can't exactly say he deserved a longer leash, but 56 PA's is not a sample size that has any meaning whatsoever.  I still say Mac is the one guy currently in the organization who had a chance to hit 30 dingers out of the LF position(OK maybe Tyler Austin fits that description but he has yet to show he can play LF).  Mac obviously witnessed the endless roster churning and knew his status in the organization.  You could see the pressure building with each boxscore.

We will probably never know what went down between Mac and Boch years ago that put him in the skipper's doghouse, but he never really worked his way completely out of it.  That did not help his cause with Zaidi I am sure.  This callup felt like something Farhan and Boch had to do to appease the mob with pitchforks in the fanbase.  As soon as Mac's struggles guaranteed a muted reaction, boom!

I hope Mac gets a chance with another organization or maybe in Asia.  If he isn't claimed off waivers, he should elect free agency and explore all options.  He does deserve to leave the game with a bit of financial security.  As for Yaz the Younger, I want him to succeed too.  He's got his own set of unrealistic expectations to deal with and a restless GM and Manager ratcheting up the pressure.  At this point who plays LF is almost a moot issue.  Until the Giants solve their pitching issues, it doesn't matter, which I guess is an argument that maybe Mac should have been given more time.

  1. I wish Mac the best. Maybe he can follow Hunter to Texas and capture some magic.

.118 though. And he wasn’t getting unlucky. He just looked lost. I understand that the G’s are desperate for power, and Mac has it in spades. But I haven’t seen so much passion for a Giants AAAA player since Bowker.

  2. Really wanted it to work out for Mac after all he's been through, but it's hard to justify keeping any player in the lineup batting .118. Probably best for Mac and the Giants that they move on. On the pitching side, it would make their rebuilding easier if Drod and Beede figure things out. According to a recent interview I read, it seems like Beede admitted that he still needs to improve on pitching out of jams. Interesting since I've never heard a mlb pitcher admit that. I'm encouraged from what I've seen from Shaun Anderson so far. Can't wait for the draft. Wondering if Zaidis drafts will follow the A's philosophy of drafting players since didn't their new scouting director Michael Holmes and Zaidi work together for the A's previously?

  3. Why not give Mac more time -- like the Giants have better options? Every game put more pressure on him until he actually broke.
When your "best" player is a 32 yo 5'11 268 pound utilityman, at this point, what difference does it make?
This is a broke-team, salvation won't come from career AAA players.

  4. The worst part about Posey, Longoria, Crawford, Belt and Melancon isn't owing them $240+ Million for a combined 2019 bWAR of 2.1, it's blocking other players and requiring rosterbations to get players on the 40-man and active rosters.
Maybe that quintet will provide an extra 5 wins in 2019 and put some butts in the seats, but it is a boring and frustrating team and offers less in the future than the little contribution now.
Add Pillar, Holland, and another $13 million owed to non-contributors. Over $250,000,000 to players with marginal WAR eating roster space.
Wouldn't you just as soon see Williamson, Slater, Shaw, Avelino, Jones, and some other young guys stinking up the place that watch overpaid, aging vets flail?

  5. japan may be the best place for williamson at this point. i wonder if zaidi may consider a coaching change soon with the roster moves not working out thus far.

    1. I'll be surprised if they change coaches now, since this is Bochy's last year. I'm wondering if they could hire Bochy's replacement in September to give the person a chance to look at the roster before the season ends? It would help the person if he's hired from the outside.
