Game Wrap 5/10/2019: Reds 7 Giants 0

They say it's a game of inches and the inches didn't go the Giants way in a nightmare of a second inning which ended with 4 unearned runs for the Reds and a lost game for the Giants.  Key Lines:

Joe Panik 2B- 1 for 2, 2B, 3 BB.  BA= .236.  Panik has a 10 game hit streak in which he is hitting .333 with an OBP of .422.

Steven Vogt C- 3 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .467.  Not sure about his D, but Vogt is definitely an upgrade on Kratz with the bat.  Giants first two hitters reached base 8 times in 10 PA's.  Unfortunately, they also had all 4 of the Giants hits on the night.

Dereck Rodriguez RHP- 5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 5.05.  Here's how DRod's second inning went:  With 1 out, Derek Dietrich hit a soft liner to LF that looked like a can of corn except it ticked off the 5'th finger of Tyler Austin's glove for a single.  Jose Iglesias hit a sharp groundball single past Longoria at 3B.  Luis Castillo popped up a bunt that Brandon Belt caught then doubled up Iglesias except Iglesias was safe on the replay.  Tucker Barnhart singled to left driving in a run.  Nick Senzel hit a long drive to the wall in CF that Steven Duggar had in his glove, but it was jarred loose by contact with the wall for a 2-run triple. Eugenio Suarez then drove in Senzel with a seeing-eye groundball double down the LF line.  At least four plays where inches made the difference, all four went against the Giants.

With the Loss, the Giants drop 8.5 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West but remain 5.5 games off the Wild Card pace.

Jeff Samardzija goes against Anthony DeSclafini tomorrow evening.

  1. Looks like we are nailing down a high draft position next year for the rebuild. I like.

  2. Giants leading (baseball reference) WAR: Of the core 4, Panik is 10th. Belt is 11th. Posey is about the same as Belt.
Is it time to replace Crawford (last 25 games: .179/.281/.238) with Avelino?

  3. Lots of teams have still been dangerous with a weak-hitting but outstanding defensive shortstop (Mark Belanger). Crawford's still got a gun but can the others pick him up with their bats? 180 days until the trade deadline - looks like Bumgarner submitted a no-trade list (Braves RedSox Yankees Phillies Cubs Cards Astros Brewers) but left off Tampa Bay who's just lost breakout star Tyler Glasnow for six weeks - and TB has three excellent pitching prospects to offer in Honeywell, McKay and Liberatore. Of course TB might just go sign up Keuchel, but what if they acquire Bumgarner AND Keuchel...PLUS TB could use a LH power hitting 1B if SFG has an extra one.
