Game Wrap 5/21/2019: Giants 4 Braves 3

So, I have a confession.  I've been working hard lately, taying up late, getting up early with bouts of insomnia in between.  So, when the Giants failed to score in the 7'th inning trailing 3-1, I packed it in and went to bed.  I missed a pretty darn exciting comeback in the 9'th inning capped by Joe Panik's walkoff 2-run single.  Key Lines:

Joe Panik 2B- 2 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .254.  Over his last 15 games, Panik is slashing .346/.470/.442.  In addition to the game-tying and winning RBI's he scored the Giants first run in the first inning on Evan Longoria's double.

Giants 9'th Inning:  With one out, Brandon Crawford singled.  Steven Duggar struck out to leave a runner on first with 2 outs.  Crawford took 2b on defensive indifference and was singled home by Kevin Pillar who then stole 2B.  PH Pablo Sandoval came through again with a single on which Pillar only advanced to 3B.  Mac Williamson then pinch ran for Pabs and stole 2B which set up Panik for the walk-off hit.

Shaun Anderson RHP- 5 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.60.  Pretty much a carbon copy of his first Start.  Anderson started the 6'th inning allowing B2B singles which brought in Reyes Moronta.  2 fly balls brought in 1 run, but Moronta limited the damage with a groundout to end the inning.  Moronta and Sam Dyson allowed another run in the 7'th inning and Mark Melancon and Trevor Gott pitched scoreless 8'th and 9'th innings respectively.

The Dodgers are probably uncatchable in the NL West, but the Win cut the Giants deficit in the Wild Card race to 4 games.

Jeff Samardzija tries to give the Giants some traction tonight facing lefty Max Fried.

  1. Sandoval was Zaidi's best signing -- he's BR #1 Giant in WAR. Panik's arb possibly #2.
Parra is still hanging in at #7 (non-pitcher). Austin?
    Doesn't Slater deserve a shot?

    1. Pretty nuts that folks have found this site yet, still don't know who pulled what or when? Maybe just a mistake, but Sandoval and Shaun Anderson are to the credit of Mr. Bobby Evans. Shows that he absolutely didn't deserve to get the ax, but here we are. I do love Zaidi, but Longoria is looking like a completely diff player from last year which, didn't help Evans. We got Anderson by Evans trade of Nunez, so a great move that went under radar for the casual fan. I believe Slater is a better fit for this team and playing @ The Belle, but also rooting for the power from Mac

  2. I went to last night's game and thoroughly enjoyed a good night of baseball. Some great defense by Craw was shown. Panik's hit was great! Wonder why the Braves let the Giants steal 2 bases uncontested in the 9th to put runners in scoring position. Also, questionable why they pitched to the red hot Joe Panik with an ice cold Steven Vogt coming up with 2 outs.

With the same group of buddies (a once a year event) I went to a game last year on April 30th against the SD Padres. Nick Hundley hit a walk-off single that drove in 2 as the giants scored 3 in the 9th to win that one.

  3. Panik's trade value increasing. Gott has red hot trade value - at 26 he is in his prime I would call him a Blue Chip reliever for some team's stretch run. A lot of people think Panda has little trade value - he is pinch hitter extraordinaire - I disagree. He would be awesome bench catalyst for contender and versatile position player to boot - and his salary like Gott;s is minimal. EXC trading chips.

    1. They all have more value outside of SF because SF doesn't have the supporting staff to cover for their short comings, most Teams do not have this issue because they are deeper - especially contending Teams.
