The Giants erupted for 6 runs in the 9'th inning for a come-from-behind win in the first game of their series against the Angels in Anaheim. Key Lines:
Thairo Estrada SS- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .272. Probably not accident the Giants lineup shows signs of life after Estrada's return from the IL. They really missed him.
J. D. Davis 3B- 2 for 4, HR(15), BB. BA= .259. Davis temporarily tied the game in the 7'th inning after the Angels scored 2 off Logan Webb to take the lead in the 6'th.
Patrick Bailey C- 2 for 3, 2B, BB. BA= .262. Bailey continues to solidify his position as Giants catcher of the future. Once more with feeling....if that's all the Giants get out of this season, it's a successful season, IMO.
Mark Matthias 2B- 1 for 4. BA= .232. Matthias scooted around the IF pretty good and looked to me like he had an idea of what to do at the plate. His 2-run single in the 9'th inning was the stake through the heart of the Angels and all but put the game away.
Logan Webb RHP- 5.2 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K's, GO/AO= 10/1. BA= 3.38. The unearned run was a dropped ball on a tag play at home plate by Patrick Bailey which is probably not fair to Bailey. Webb wasn't his sharpest but did not allow a run until the 6'th inning. He didn't get out of the inning but after Tristan Beck RHP recorded the third out, left the game with his team having a chance to win.
The Giants remain 4 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West. They regain sole possession of the top Wild Card playoff spot by 0.5 games over the idle Phillies and by 3 games over the Reds.
The Giants starting pitcher for tomorrow is TBD facing Lucas Giolito RHP who the Angels acquired at the trade deadline.
Churn Watch:
Luis Gonzalez OF was activated off the 60-day IL and optioned to AAA Sacramento. Isan Diaz IF was DFA'd to make room for Gonzalez and was claimed off waivers by the Tigers. So Diaz once again fails to find traction at the MLB level. Wishing he finds it with the Tigers.
I was hoping for a prospect for prospect trade including Ramos and Bart. But those rarely happen
ReplyDeleteAfter a quite satisfying WIN with multiple comebacks, the following is apropos perhaps of nothing but suggests how far the Giants have come in their drafting and development since the conclusion of the string of success from 2010 to 2016.
ReplyDeleteCompare this Fangraphs ranking (reported by Dr B on October 31, 2016) with what the Giants have now.
Aside for the Honorable Mention of Camilo Doval @ #33 and other contributors to the Giants, such as Duggar (#14), Maronta (#17), and Slater (#29), is anyone not ecstatic with the state of the system today?

ReplyDeleteThere is no end to irony in baseball:
ReplyDeleteThe Angels, Bless them, at 54-50 on the morning of August 1, at the edge of the Playoff ranking, winning 10 of 13, decide to try to hold on to Ohtani at the trade deadline with the hope that he will re-sign with them since he has led them to the postseason, lose 7 in a row, to be 8 games out of Playoff contention with 3 teams ahead of them to get in.
Revenge of the baseball gods.
Luis Matos update he is at -0.5 WAR, obviously he is young and he needs to adjust with to the ML level, and he doesn't look like he's played that badly. Maybe its my orange tinted glasses. He's hit much better in July than June, but August has been really quite bad (as has the whole team).
ReplyDeleteBut the data generally doesn't lie and maybe the Giants need to try a different outfield deployment, with this team in contention he might need time in the minors to work on some things, and then a call up in September as a defensive replacement OF and pinch runner.
I am probably the number #1 Luis Matos superfan, but I think it might be time to make a difficult decision on him to ensure team makes it to the postseason and gets a good run at the division (though 3 in the win and 2 in the loss will be hard to catch).
