Game Wrap 8/18/2023: Brave 4 Giants 0

Manager Gabe Kapler missed this game due to a suspension for getting too close to the dugout after getting thrown out of Wednesday's game.  He didn't miss much as Alex Cobb RHP continued a troubling pattern of falling behind early and the Giants offense managed just 2 hits.

After the Loss, the Giants remain in 2'nd place in the Wild Card race but lead the Reds by just 0.5 games.

Logan Webb RHP tries to even the series tomorrow facing Yonny Chirinos RHP.

    1. In comments he has made, Buster does not sound like he has any interest in devoting that level of time and energy to baseball right now so I do not expect to see that anytime soon.

  2. I like Mike Yastrzemski as a player and have been disappointed and concerned about his hamstring injury which landed him on the IL 3 times this season. Will he be able to come back and help me team this season. Yaz is arbitration eligible so would iit be smart for the Giants to offer him a 2024 contract? They have young outfielders like Luis Matos and Wade Meckler coming so maybe the Giants should give them a chance to establish themselves.

    1. For 3 years now, every time YtY appears to be finding some traction, he's gotten hurt. Back to the fact that the best predictor of future injury is a history of injury and multiple injuries just compound it. Whether it's play the kids or bring in another veteran by free agency or trade I think it's time to move on.

    2. YtY was one of the great finds - won the fan base - but he's not a kid, he's in decline but still reasonable pay-wise.
Unlikely to help this year, he's still worth a look in 2024 and reasonably priced.
He needs to earn a spot.

  3. Conforto (9-19 4 W in last 6 games) is receiving criticism for his efforts this year, but, after missing the entire 2022 season, his 2023 "comeback" isn’t much less than his career:
    2023 .249/.343/.411/.754 (prior to Friday’s game)
    < 2023 .254/.354/.461/.816
His 2023 bWAR is slightly better than his last full season but well off his best years.
Even if he gets “hot,” he unlikely to get better than the $18M that's guaranteed with Giants in free agency next year. If he take another shot with the Giants, he’ll be a better (and cheaper) DH than 2023 Pederson is, plus he plays a passable RF.
He is also likely to be “better” than Made-of-Glass Haniger who at best will be the opposite side DH, if he can get on the field.
With the first game in Atlanta going predictably, once the Braves scored 4 runs, the game was over: in their last 27 games, the Giants scored more than 4 runs only 4 times and won just 3 of them!
When the offense turned off after a 11-10 win in Cincinnati on July 18th, the Giants had the 3rd best record in the National League and only 1½ game behind that team down south.
If the faucet can be suddenly turned off, is it possible to suddenly turn it on?
The Giants are trying everything but the vets are not producing.

  4. One more bad start and Cobb’s era is over 4.00 and he’s got a horrible whip. Should’ve sold high on him. If he’s with us next year, he’ll likely have a horrible age 36 season.

  5. Non baseball - those living in southern California hunker down and stay safe from the hurricane. We get those hurricane warnings here in Hawaii too.

    1. Not quite sure what to expect from this but I did go out and make sure the rain gutters were clear this morning. We already have cloud cover and some breezy winds strong enough blow down the dried pine needles and palm fronds.
