Game Wrap 7/13/2017: Giants 3 Reds 1

The Giants gots a Quality Start and then some out of Matt Moore while Brandon Belt and Justin Ruggiano supplied just enough power for their second consecutive Win, the first back-to-back wins for the Giants since April 9-10.  Key Lines:

Brandon Belt LF/1B- 1 for 3, HR(6), BB.  BA= .220.  Belt's dinger in the first inning was a Splash Hit, the 6'th of his Giants career.   Barry Bonds had 35 and Pablo Sandoval 7.  Belt seems to be morphing into a classic 3-true outcomes hitter. As most of his recent PA's have resulted in BB's, K's or HR's.

Justin Ruggiano RF- 1 for 3, HR(1).  BA= .294.  Ruggy might be working his way into more playing time

Kelby Tomlinson 3B= 1 for 3, SB(2).  BA= .261.  Tomlinson started at 3B after Christian Arroyo took a Jeff Samardzija to the face in the scrum after the extra-inning walk-off win Friday night…er, Saturday morning.  Arroyo PH in this game, so he's apparently not seriously hurt

Matt Moore LHP- 7.1 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 5.67.  Moore notched his first win since 4/10/2017 and went deep into the game after the 17 inning marathon Friday night.

The Win drew the Giants into a 4'th place tie with the Padres in the NL West trailing the Rockies by 9 games.

Jeff Samardzija tries for his first Win of the season and a series Win at the same time tomorrow facing RHP Tim Adleman.

  1. There was some great defense by the Giants too. Surprised the Giants won that game after seeing the starting lineup. That was a lot of pitches Moore threw. Law may get better, but he certainly makes it interesting almost every time. Could Belt look less like a whinny kid when he doesn't agree with a called strike. I know that's probably the last thing that should be getting under my skin about him, besides the hole in his swing or lack of ability to bunt when the opposing team is begging him to try by vacating the left side of the field, but it is. Is it me or does it seem like every time its two out with runners in scoring position and up comes Gorkys Hernandez? He is hitting well below the Mendoza Line. Maybe it might be time to think about calling up Carlos Moncrief or Orlando Calixte?

  2. Williamson, Heathcott, even Slater could help the OF and let Span rest 1 out of 3 -- is Denard for real when he's healthy?
BBe nice to have a little more power -- MAC!
    Give Pence some rest, too.
To be a believer, we need to see at least 4 wins in a row and three "2-out-of-3's" -- then the corner has arrived.
Buster has to re-learn how to hit with runners on base! His 6 HR's are nice but they've only provided 6 runs. His bases empty/runners on base/RISP is .419/.273/.238! He's had a runner on 3 for 6 ABs and has 1 RBI. He has not driven in a runner from 1st all year. In 44 AB's with runners on, he has 3 RBI's and not a sac fly.
The Giants haven't really helped, Posey has had to leadoff an inning 36 times, his slash line leading off is .375/.444/.594! The Giants must get runners on ahead of him and have someone just ahead of him who is less likely to make an out. Someone named Hunter Pence!
Sadly, the Giants just don't have 3 players who can get on base even a third of the time, and that's what they need.
Perhaps Posey should be moved up a slot so he gets more ABs although he does clog up the bases -- which is another problem when he leads off an inning: he gets on base nearly half the time! Then it takes three singles to get him home, even a double with 2 outs isn't going to score him from first.
I'm keeping the HOPE, but far from convinced. Today is another gotta win.
