Down on the Farm: 5/4/2017

AAA  Sacramento River Cats defeated the Fresno Grizzlies 4-2:

Orlando Calixte SS- 1 for 4, HR(4), BB.  BA= .266.
Austin Slater CF- 1 for 2, 3 BB, SB(4).   BA= .296.
Ryder Jones 3B- 2 for 4, BB, SB(2).  BA= .286.
Justin Ruggiano DH- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .259.
Tim Fedorowicz C- 2 for 4, SB(1).  BA= .314.
Chris Stratton RHP- 4.1 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 5.52.

Stratton apparently got shipped out while I wasn't looking.  I think Josh Osich got the call to replace him on the Giants 25 man roster.  Calixte has shown an intriguing power/speed combo while playing multiple positions. He is hitting .341 over his last 10 games.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels outlasted the Bowie Baysox 3-2 in 11 innings:

Miguel Gomez 2B- 2 for 5.  BA= .322.
Hunter Cole RF- 1 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .244.
Carlos Garcia LF- 3 for 5.  BA= .241.
Andrew Suarez LHP- 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 2.93.
Carlos Alvarado RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.82.
Tyler Cyr RHP- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.38.

Suarez has 25 K's against 6 BB's in 27 IP.  This might have been his strongest start of the season. He went 6 IP, 4 H, 1R, 1 BB, 8 K's in his second start.

High A  Stockton Ports pounded the San Jose Giants 8-2:

Bryan Reynolds CF- 2 for 4.  BA= .273.
Aramis Garcia DH- 1 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .333.
Matt Winn C- 2 for 4.  BA= .385.
Michael Connolly RHP- 5 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 2.30.

Low A  Kannapolis Intimidators outscored the Augusta Greenjackets 5-4 in 6 innings:

Sandro Fabian RF- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .278.
Frandy De La Rosa 1B- 3 for 3, 2B.  BA= .234.

  1. The following have played OF in Sacramento, or possibly could play OF, with Games ABs, HRs, and BA shown:
Carlos Moncrief 19 55 1 .327 best ever year, or is he AAAA (if that)?
    Jae-Gyun Hwang 23 94 0 .309 steady, probably not an outfielder
Austin Slater 23 81 1 .296 potential, is he ready? soon?
Orlando Calixte 26 94 4 .266 been hot lately, is he really an OFer?
    Justin Ruggiano 15 54 0 .259 ?
Drew Stubbs 10 39 2 .256 hanging in because he can play CF?
Mac Williamson 10 41 1 .244 potential power, can he stay healthy?
    Chris Marrero 6 25 1 .240 AAAA?
Kyle Blanks 17 52 2 .212 even if he were hitting, no OF help here
    Wynton Bernard 17 42 0 .167

Presuming Mac will get his shot as soon as he's ready (now?), given the state of the outfield (hang in there, Hunter, please don't hurt yourself!) can any of these (other than Mac) help in the outfield this year?
With the surfeit of IFers, are Hwang and Calixte doomed?

    1. I see I'm not the only one thinking about the disaster in the OF.

  2. Are we desperate enough to call up Slater...? I mean, we're down to a 32 year old 'never was' CFer with career.242 average and Nunez & Belt have both been, at times, shoved out into LF while Gillespie is scuffling at 3B because Arroyo has to cover for Crawford...

It's the whole 'for want of a nail, the shoe was lost...'

  3. Really hard to figure what has happened to the Giants outfield! It has not been a strength since Barry Bonds.
Has the Front Office completely fallen asleep?
According to dWAR, Span (and Parker) are the only current roster players with positive numbers (0.2), but Span has no arm and has been a liability in the OF for 5 years.
Parker? Has good arm but is anyone who has seen him play confident with him?
Williamson is possibly marginally positive but can't stay in the lineup.
We love Hunter but he hasn't played a full season since 2014 and hasn't had a positive dWAR since 2009.
Since Barry in 2007, only once has a Giant outfielder hit more than 20 HR's!
True, the Giants haven't relied on power in their WS teams but with Posey, Pence, and Belt falling off so dramatically and Sandoval leaving, a HR has become a celebrated event!
Crawford even led the team 2 years ago!
Without the solid pitching and clutch hitting SF has enjoyed, we see what has happened to the team since last year's all star break -- why should we expect a change?
