The Giants offense scored 6 runs to support Ty Blach's 7 shutout innings before he faltered in the 8'th. With echoes of the final game of 2016 ringing in the distance after a 4-run Cubs 8'th, Mark Melancon saved the game in the 9'th inning. Key Lines:
Joe Panik 2B- 3 for 4, 2 2B, HR(2), HBP. BA= .268. Panik breaks out the power bat with 3 XBH's out of the leadoff spot in the lineup.
Brandon Belt 1B- 2 for 5, HR(9). BA= .241. Belt Panik and Ruggiano had solo HR's to run the Giants streak of consecutive solo HR's to 18, 3 short of the team record. Anybody know what the MLB record is?
Justin Ruggiano RF- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(2). BA= .237. Ruggy is good for occasional pop in his bat.
Ty Blach LHP- 7 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 9/3. ERA= 4.10. How about Ty Blach? 7 innings of shutout ball. 3 of the hits and all 3 of the runs he gave up came in the 8'th inning when he was probably out of gas and failed to record an out.
Mark Melancon RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(9). ERA= 2.63. This time the Giants had a real closer who Saved the game.

The team record from 2011 is the MLB record. It's the Giant way. Really questionable decision to leave in Blach to start the 8th. He was already at something like 94 pitches. Kid did his job. Let him go out clean
ReplyDeleteBlach pitched a great game and it worked out in the end, but yeah, he probably should not have faced more than 1 batter in the 8'th.
DeleteWith Law and Strickland available I think a quicker hook in the 8th would have been ok.
DeleteAnother win! It would be great if the Giants won this series. Would be a huge boost for the team. You nailed it with the big time flashback off the final playoff game last season. Wonder what is with Law? As soon as Smoltz said Okert has control issues he hits Rizzo. I know you can get rusty by not getting steady playing time so Hernandez's bad angle in the 3rd is understandable. But his halfway dive for the ball was a head scratcher when he wasn't even close. Blach is dealing and I wouldn't be surprised if he remained a starter at the start of next season, regardless if Beede or Gregario make the team, and keep it. Hopefully this is the beginning of a Joe Panik hitting streak. I still believe he is too good to be hitting that low. When MLB showed the offensive production from Posey compared to the rest of the Giants as a team was pretty shocking. Regardless of all these Mendoza line hitting outfielders.
