Game Wrap 5/17/2017: Dodgers 6 Giants 1

This will be short.  This game was not as close as the final score would lead you to believe.  Eduardo Nunez hit a HR in the 9'th inning to account for the Giants offense.  Clayton Kershaw was at the top of his game.  Johhny Cueto was not.  This game was over before it got out of the top of the first inning when the Dodgers took a 2-0 lead that might as well have been 12-0.

The Rockies were rained out in Minnesota so the Loss left the Giants 9 games behind the NL West leaders.

The Giants get a travel day and start a weekend series in St Louis Friday night with Matt Moore facing Michael Wacha.

  1. I have Cueto and Kershaw in my fantasy baseball league. They kind of cancelled each other out last night. I'd have rather, as a fan, had it cancel out the other way...

  2. LOL. "This game was not as close as the final score would lead you to believe." Good one.

  3. Although, in a way, it could have been a lot better except for the Dodgers' "great situational hitting" -- they scored scored all 5 of Cueto's runs with 2 outs.
Grandal's 2-out 2-run double in the first was hit off his shoe tops, Cueto threw a WP to score Utley just before Grandal flew out to end the 3rd, and Puig hit a 1-2 pitch for a 2-run single again with 2 outs.
It's certainly true that if you play with fire -- put runners on base -- you will eventually get burned, and Cueto was living dangerously.
But it doesn't really matter if you don't score.
Dinger by Núñez was the Giants' 13 consecutive bases-empty home run! Gotta be a record!

    1. Well, that's worth a Google:

On August 14th, 2011, Cody Ross hit a 2-Run HR to end a 21-consecutive solo HR streak by our Giants. 21 is the record.

    2. Dexter Fowler has been scuffling this year with low BA and not running and missing a few games with minor ailments. Not what St Louis expected with the big 5-year contract. If the Giants can control him, they will fare better as they did with the Reds when Hamilton was corralled.
A guy to watch is "Mags Sierra" -- 21-year old jumping up from high A to the lineup, bypassing another highly touted AAA OFer. Would the Giants do that?
Despite StL losing 2 in Boston (the last one Wednesday in 13 innings with Mike Leake starting), they have been playing well. Giants caught a break not seeing Leake who has been outstanding.
Two of three here would be terrific, being swept is woe.
