Scouting the 2017 Draft: Sam Carlson and Matt Sauer

Sam Carlson, RHP, HS.  6'4", 208 lbs.

Carlson has an ideal pitcher's body.  Scouting reports vary regarding his velocity with one reporting that he hit 97.  94 seems to be more realistic.  BA has him listed at #15 on its new Top 200 Draft Prospects list.  It's getting a bit hard to separate a whole gaggle of HS pitchers.  I could see a kid like Carlson begin in play from the mid-first round on.

Matt Sauer, RHP, HS.  6'4", 200 lbs.

Sauer hails from Santa Maria, CA and Ernest Righetti HS.  I wondered if Ernest Righetti was any relation to Dave Righetti but was not able to find a connection in a brief internet search.  Sauer also has an ideal pitcher's body with a 92 MPH FB and lot of room to get bigger and stronger.  He has a huge crossover step with his left foot landing at almost midpoint between 3B and home plate.  BA has him at #22 on their new list.  Again, I see him as a late first round, but more likely supplemental or second round talent.  I still wonder about a Dave Righetti connection to his HS.
