Game Wrap 5/13/2016: Giants 3 D'Backs 1

Jeff Samardzija outdueled Shelby Miller in the desert thanks to a 3-run dinger by Joe Panik in the 6'th inning.  Key Lines:

Denard Span- 2 for 4.  BA= .259.  Span seems to be hitting his stride going 5 for 13 plus 2 BB's in his last 3 games.

Joe Panik- 2 for 3, HR(5), BB.  BA= .256.  Panik homers for the second game in a row and is now tied for the team HR lead with Hunter Pence.

Angel Pagan- 1 for 2, BB.  BA= .319.  Welcome back, Angel Pagan!  Pagan was back in the 9-hole and started the winning rally with a single.

Jeff Samardzija- 8 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 10/3.  ERA= 2.88.  Another strong pitching performance by the Shark and this guy might be the bargain of the offseason in all of MLB!  Shark has taken a huge load off the bullpen by averaging 7 IP since the start of the season.  In his last 3 starts, he's gone 8.0, 7.2 and 8.0 IP.

Josh Osich- 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 1.88.  Bochy again brings in a LHP to face Jake Lamb in the 9'th inning, except Lamb was leading off the inning in this game.

Santiago Casilla- 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(8).  ERA= 1.84.  Casilla comes in to get the last 2 outs of the inning and earn the Save.  He apologized to Bochy for his outburst the night before and now there is nothing but smiles and laughter coming from the sandbox again.

The Win keeps the Giants tied with the Dodgers, who outscored the Cardinals 8-4, atop the NL West(The Giants trail by percentage points).  The Rockies topped the Mets 5-2 to remain 1.5 games off the pace in 3'rd place.  The D'Backs slipped to 3 games back in 4'th place while the Last Place Padres took a whitewash from the Brewers 1-0 to fall 3.5 games behind.

Jake Peavy tries to get the back end of the rotation back in the Win column today against a tough opponent in Patrick Corbin.

  1. IF the Giants can get into the playoffs ( I know a lot of baseball left) the top of their rotation is among the best. That along with just a little hitting and some defense and they again have their winning even year formula. Need to keep building the momentum and hopefully either Cain and or Peavy can step up some.

  2. Jake Peavy career wise in 6 starts in Arizona over 37 innings is 3 and 1 with a 1.31 era. Go Jake, Go Giants!
