Game Wrap 5/11/2016: Giants 5 Blue Jays 4

It took 13 innings, but the Giants finally salvaged a win in the final game of the Blue Jays series with rookie Albert Suarez notching his first MLB Win.  Key Lines:

Denard Span- 1 for 4, 2BB, Sac.  BA= .246.  Span's OBP if .353 on the season and .424 in his last 7 games.  He's not the problem with the Giants offense.

Matt Duffy- 3 for 6, BB, SB(4).  BA= .261.  Duffy is hitting just .261 on the season, but .345 over his last 7 games, .276 over his last 15 and .277 over his last 30 with OBP's of .441, .364 and .349 in the same time frames.  He's not really the problem with the Giants offense either.

Hunter Pence- 2 for 6, 2B.  BA= .295.  Pence has been solid at the plate too.  The black holes in the lineup have been Panik and Posey with Pagan MIA with an injury.

Madison Bumgarner- 6.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 2.72.  QS+ for Bummy.  He didn't get the W, but kept his team in the game.

Albert Suarez- 1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, W(1-0).  ERA= 0.00.  In the span of 4 games, Suarez has achieved his first MLB appearance, his first MLB K and his first MLB W all while allowing 0 Runs in 4 IP.  Pretty good week for the kid, you think?

The Win left the Giants 0.5 games behind the Dodgers pending the outcome of their game against the Mets.  The Rockies topped Arizona 8-7 to drop the D'Backs into a 3'rd place tie, 1.5 games back, again pending the Dodgers outcome.  Look who swept the mighty Cubs in a DH!  Padres win 7-4 and 1-0.  Drew Pomeranz struck out 10 in the 1-0 game.  Padres are 3 games off the pace pending.

The Giants travel to Arizona to take on the D'Backs with Johnny Cueto taking on Zack Greinke in Game 1 tomorrow evening.

  1. Like Aoki before him Denard Span is taking up a spot - left filed -- that could use power. Two years in a row now. Williamson should be kept there for a month and see what happens. Also Peavy and Caine should gracefully be moved out.

    1. All kinds of things wrong here:

      1. Span was brought in to upgrade CF, which he has done. He is not blocking Mac Williamson!

      2. At some point Mac should, and probably will, be given an extended opportunity to win the LF job. There is abundant evidence that he is not quite ready for that opportunity just yet.

      3. While Peavy and Cain have pitched horribly so far this season, the alternatives are not at all appealing either. The Giants best bet is to continue to run Peavy and Cain out there and hope they turn it around. Their most recent starts are encouraging.
