Down on the Farm: 5/9/2016

AAA  Las Vegas 51's blanked the Sacramento River Cats 1-0:

Gorkys Hernandez CF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .283.
Ramiro Pena 2B- 2 for 4.  BA= .345.
Chris Heston RHP- 6.2 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 4.12.
Duke Welker RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 2.08.

A good Heston start.  A dominant appearance from Welker who has allowed runs in just 1 of 8 appearances.  He has 10 K's in 8.1 IP, but has allowed 7 BB's, although 3 of the BB's came in one appearance.

AA  Harrisburg Senators defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels 6-4:

Christian Arroyo SS- 2 for 4.  BA= .275.
Austin Slater CF- 1 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .233.
Tyler Beede RHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.48.
Lucas Giolito RHP(Senators)- 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.74.

Not only did Beede outpitch the much higher ranked prospect, Giolito, he has a lower ERA on the season by more than a full run.  Per Covechatter's twitter feed, Beede was apparently hit in the helmet by a Giolito breaking ball and left the game.

High A  San Jose Giants were idle.

Low A  Rome Braves outlasted the Augusta Greenjackets in 13 innings 3-2:

Jalen Miller 2B- 3 for 6, 3B.  BA= .243.
Dillon Dobson 1B- 2 for 6.  BA= .283.
Miguel Gomez DH- 3 for 4, 2B, Sac.  BA= .359.

Tyler Cyr RHP- 3.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.82.

Dominant start for Santos. Cyr gets back on track with a dominant appearance.

  1. I would be ok if they end up giving Heston a few starts. They need to see what the young pitchers can do. Although it was just for fun, I thought about your prediction of Beede making his MLB debut as I was following his game on the net, then he gets plunked. According to the Giants prospect talk twitter, he's fine. I would love to see Beede put together a good season and who knows, what could happen next.

  2. Can't believe the Giants are wasting a quality start by Cain no less. Saw that Andrew Sularz was promoted to AA per Alex Pavolictwitter. Someone asked him who does he think is closer to reaching the big leagues Beede or Sularz. He still said Beede. Do you agree with him?

    1. I think you mean Andrew Suarez. As for who will reach the majors first? Maybe neither one. Look who got promoted to Sacramento. Joan Gregorio! Gregorio has the added factor of already being on the 40 man roster.

  3. Yup I read about Gregorio later. They're smart lining up their internal pitching options in case a rotation shakeup is needed.
Anyway this minor league news is more interesting thanks to the way they've been playing lately. Scoring 3 runs in 41 innings is tough to understand.

    1. Tough to take, but maybe explainable. Buster Posey hasn't hit much ever since his foot injury. Gotta wonder if he's completely healthy. Ditto Joe Panik. Again, we see the offense struggle when Pagan is out. And maybe the league has caught up with Matt Duffy? That's 4 pretty big parts of the lineup, especially Posey who the Giants desperately need to get going again.
