Game Wrap 5/5/2016: Rockies 17 Giants 7

The Giants set a MLB record by giving up 12 or more runs in one inning for the second time in a week while suffering a crushing defeat to the Rockies in Coors Field.  Key Lines:

Denard Span- 3 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .259.  Span has a .357 OBP to go with the BA so he's been a plus at the top of the order.

Matt Duffy- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .254.  Duffy had been slumping again.  Hopefully this gets him back on track.

Buster Posey- 2 for 2, 2B, BB.  BA= .330.  Buster doing his thing.  Aiming for another batting title.

Mac Williamson- 1 for 5.  BA= .250.  Mac is getting some starts while Angel Pagan is DTD with a hammy.  Blanco played RF to give Pence a rest.  Part of me says Blanco deserves the playing time in Pagan's absence, but another part of me would sure like to see Mac gets some contiguous AB's and try to get his feet on the ground because the offensive upside is there.

Gregor Blanco- 2 for 4.  BA= .326.  Best 4'th OF in baseball!

Matt Cain- 4 IP, 10 H, 8 R, 6 ER, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 7.84.  Ooof!  No bueno.  For what it's worth, Cain's peripherals on the season are significantly better than his ERA, but they are still not good, and there is nothing in this line that inspires the least bit of confidence.  Probably time to get Cainer out of the line of fire, for awhile, but who replaces him?

The Giants are two teams right now.  One team if 12-6 in the games Bumgarner, Cueto and Samardzija start and 3-9 in games Peavy and Cain start.  At least Peavy's 8/1 K/BB in Wednesday's game makes you think he has good stuff and can do better.  Again, nothing to inspire any such hope in Cainer's line in this game.

Derek Law- 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.17.  Law is looking good with 10 K's against just 1 BB in 7.2 IP.

The Loss evens the Giants record at 15-15.  They are tied for first place in the NL West with the Rockies and Dodgers who are at 14-14.  The Padres are 2.5 games behind in 4'th place and the D'Backs 3 games behind in the cellar.

Madison Bumgarner takes the hill today facing Chad Bettis.

Great to be back.  Lots of catching up to do.  I attended a conference last weekend in the ATL then took a driving trip to visit some relatives.  I barely looked at a boxscore during that time, so bear with me as I get back up to speed here.

  1. Welcome back Doc!
Missed your daily recaps and minors coverage. Hope you had a great trip.
I am rooting for Cain and Peavey, but right now, they inspire zero confidence whatsoever. Both seem to do fairly well in the first 2-3 innings and then the wheels completely come off. No one in AAA is lighting it up, so am not clamoring for either or both to be immediately removed from the rotation. I hear that the Giants will attend Lincecum's workout. Any news on if they will also attend the workout for Kyle Lohse? What other options do they have if Cain and/or Peavey don't rebound in the near future?

    1. Yup. It's a tough situation. I don't really have any answers right now either. I'll have to do some digging and see what I can come up with. Competition for any available pitching is going to be fierce now with the injury to Garrett Richards.

  2. The way Cain and Peavy are going, the Giants are going to be a .500 club and all the excellent pitching by the other three starters will go for naught. And there is nothing in what they're doing that makes one think that they'll step it up. Ever worse, there's not a lot of 'tearing it up in high minors' going on right now, with the exception of Joan Gregorio, so who we going to call up?

It's pretty tough. I'm thinking that unless those two get it together pronto, the Giants will have to pull a trade and sign Lincecum if they're going to compete this year.

    1. Can't argue with that and Timmy seems like the longest of longshots at this point, but may be worth a flying if he's not too expensive.

  3. the deadline for trades is still a long ways away, but back end rotation, and bullpen has to be address, and maybe some bench dept.
