AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels beat the Binghamton Mets 4-1:

Christian Arroyo 3B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .279.
Ali Castillo 2B-3 for 4, 3B.  BA= .297.
Jeff Arnold C- l for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .212.
Dan Slania RHP- 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 4.33.
Ray Black RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 7.02.
Chase Johnson RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.58.
Tyler Rogers RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(3).  ERA= 0.00.

Well, this is innneresting!  Dan Slania takes Chase Johnson's start, at it obviously wasn't because Johnson is hurt.  It also was not because Johnson has been struggling.  He hasn't been the big strikeout pitcher this season, but he had allowed just 3 ER in 18.2 IP over is last 3 starts.  Anybody have the scoop on what went down here?  Probably no connection, but this brings back memories of him being in the coach's doghouse in college for mysterious reasons.  Anyway, I've always thought the Giants might try Slania as a starter somewhere along the way.  I'm guessing he just bought himself at least one more start with this dominating 5-inning performance.  Tyler Rogers extends his scoreless innings string to 22.1.

High A  Visalia Rawhide crushed the San Jose Giants 16-0:

Nothing to see here.  Biggest margin of defeat in Little Giants history.  Jordan Johnson was the starter and got lit up big time.

Low A Charleston River Dogs topped the Augusta Greenjackets 3-1:

Cory Taylor RHP- 7.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 8 K's, GO/AO= 10/2.  ERA= 2.03.

In his last 4 starts, Taylor has allowed 4 Runs in 25.2 IP for a 1.44 ERA.  Overall, he's averaging a K/9 of 9 with a GO/AO= 2.71.  Man, the early returns in the Giants 2015 draft are pretty amazing.  Taylor was their 8'th round selection.

  1. Dr. B--A few things I heard around Richmond are that Chase Johnson, who's K rate was down b ig time, loses some velocity on his FB after a few innings, maybe making the Giants to rethink him as a reliever....The bullpen was a mess and destroying Richmond the last few weeks so the Staff decided to switch up roles.....taking BLACK away from closing which was playing with his mind/control and moving him to the less pressurized 7th inning role (with Mizemko and SMith)..and now looking like Chase Johnson instead of Slania for the 8th with the unscored upon Tyler Rogers as the new closer....Slania is a HUGE boy, has the strength and stamina to be a starter and I guess the Giants always had the thought in the back of their minds...Good time to make the change with the tempos finally heating up out here...

  2. Could it be an effort to keep his IP count down (with periodic skipped starts) for some help at the end of the year?

  3. I saw something on Twitter related to CJ's velocity as well. He's still reportedly up to 98 in short stints, but I doesn't hold the velocity very well I guess. Either way, Slania's first start EVER was pretty sweet.

Arroyo is heating back up, playing a little 3B lately too. I wonder if the Giants are looking closely at what Austin Slater is doing out there in CF? Might be the hottest bat in the system right now. Very interesting.
