Game Wrap 5/15/2016: Giants 2 D'Backs 1

The Giants avenged an early season sweep by the D'Backs in San Francisco as Matt Cain turned in his second consecutive dominant start to lead the Giants in wrapping up a 4-game sweep in Arizona.  Key lines:

Trevor Brown- 1 for   4, HR(4).  BA= .261.  Brownie jumped on the first pitch he saw from Rubby De La Rosa, who was otherwise unhittable, and sent it over the LF wall for the Giants first run.  Brown now  has 4 dingers in just 50 PA on the season, remarkable for a backup catcher.

Matt Cain- 7 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 5.87.  Rebounding from a disaster start on 5/5, Cainer has allowed just 3 Runs in 15 IP over his last 2 starts with 2 BB's and 12 K's.  Hey!  The Giants finally have a 5 man rotation!

Hunter Strickland- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 3.18.  Strickland came in after Lopes walked PH Phil Gosselin to lead off the 8'th inning.  He immediately got a GIDP and then another groundout.  Inning over!

Santiago Casilla- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K, Save(9).  ERA= 1.72.  Casilla got into trouble again with runners at the corners and just 1 out.  He got a DP grounder, but the runner was initially called safe at 1B scoring the tying run.  There were two questions on the play:  1. Did Crawford stay on the 2B bag long enough and 2.  Did Brandon Belt keep his foot on the bag long enough.  Initial replays showed Belt clearly kept his foot on the bag.  2B was more of a question mark.  Coming out of the replay the initial call was safe at 2B and out at 1B, which still would have scored the run.  Turned out the ump made a mistake on the replay call and both runners were actually out.  Game over!  Gotta say, that's a tough way to lose for the D'Backs, but it looked like instant replay got the calls right.

The Win gave the Giants sole possession of first place by 1 game after the Dodgers lost to the Cardinals 5-2 in Chavez Ravine.  The Rockies won again over the Mets to remain to remain in 3'rd place, 1.5 games behind the Giants.  The 4'th place Padres lost to the BrewCrew 3-2 to fall 4.5 games behind the Giants while the D'Backs remain in last place, 5 games behind the leaders.

The Giants get a travel day off tomorrow then start a 3 game series in San Diego with their top 3 pitchers lined up for the series.

  1. And... the Peavy/Cain starts probably make even the idea of a Lincecum reunion less likely. Sounds like he's leaning toward the ChiSox. Perhaps the Giants' interest in him lit a fire under Peavy and Cain?
