The Giants offense continued to sputter, but managed to generate 2 runs. That was enough for the pitching as they edged the A's 2-1 at AT&T Park tonight: Key lines:
Juan Uribe- 2 for 3, 2B. Only multihit game for the Giants.
Matt Cain- 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 2-11. Cain seemed to be in midseason form working his fastball in the 90-93 MPH range. He stayed mostly up in the zone and had the A's in the popcorn machine all night. The flyouts were mostly harmless popups to the infield, a lot in foul territory.
Denny Bautista, Guillermo Mota, Waldis Joaquin- 1 scoreless IP each. It would seem, after todays cutdowns that these 3 are competing for the last 2 bullpen slots.
Cutdown Day: The Giants reassigned Brandon Crawford, Felix Romero and Steve Holm to minor league camp. They optioned Buster Posey, Kevin Pucetas, Henry Sosa, Alex Hinshaw, Ryan Rohlinger and Matt Downs to AAA Fresno. Posey is the big news. If he wasn't going to play every day, and he wasnn't, it made no sense for him to play his way to "Super 2" status. We might see him again after midseason. Kevin Pucetas, Henry Sosa and Alex Hinshaw seemed to be in the competition for the last two bullpen slots. Looks like it's down to Joaquin, Mota and Bautista. If I had to take a wild guess, I'd say it will be Mota and Bautista, but Joaquin was very impressive again tonight.

I think it'll be Mota and Juaquin. They only have 2 spots on the 40-man roster open, and one will be filled with Wellenmeyer. If they take Mota and Bautista, they'd have to DFA somebody to clear room on the 40-man.
ReplyDeleteThat's a good point. I hope you are right. Joaquin looks like a stud. I hope they stretch him out a little into 2 and 3 inning situations, and encourage him to work on secondary stuff. I think he can eventually be either a top of the rotation starter or a closer.
