Game Wrap 04-16-2010: Addendum

Word in Extra Baggs is that Rowand has 2 fractures in his cheekbone and a mild concussion. I really hope The Gamer doesn't try to play through this, and yes, I'm ready to see what Eugenio Velez can do with some regular PT, even if Rowand was having a pretty good season so far.

BTW, Vicente Padilla, who I already didn't like very much, just went waaay up on my list of disliked players. And, watch out for the beanball wars. Some Dodger is going to have to go down before the series is done. I'd say Ethier, Martin or Kemp would be the leading candidates.

  1. Is it possible to rethink the Fred Lewis trade if Rowand has to go on the DL?

I know Velez is hot right now but there is not much in his career numbers to suggest anything but a replacement level player and the thought of his defense makes me shutter.

  2. I, for the life of me, can not comprehend why last night was not the time for retaliation. The game was over, the emotions were fresh, and we were using scrub pitchers. There will NEVER be a better time for retaliation.

  3. On the Lewis trade. I think even with FLew still in the organization, Rowand's replacement would be a platoon of Torres and Velez. If that doesn't work out, I'm not so sure Darren Ford hadn't moved ahead of Fred on the CF depth chart off his ST performance, possibly Peguero too. Ford and Peguero are both on the 40 man roster.

As for retaliation, I agree, unless it's just understood that the Rowand beaning was payback for the Matt Kemp dusting and they're all even now. It's pretty tough to believe that with the injury to Rowand, though.

Once again, thanks for reading and commenting, everybody!

  4. Hey, you have a great blog, DrB, thanks goes to you!

I wouldn't have traded Lewis, but sometimes that's fate, one day earlier and the Giants might have kept him instead (though the talk is bringing up Rohlinger).

The Giants have played Schierholtz in CF before, so I would rather we just go L/R in the platoon, Schierholtz and Bowker vs. RHP, Velez and Torres vs. LHP, and see how that goes. If it's ugly early, just bite the bullet and rejigger to the Velez in CF full-time for a while.

I would also wonder how DeRosa would handle it, he has played the OF much above average before, if he can be average in CF, that would still be valuable with his bat.

The problem with a clear retaliation is that our guy gets suspended, clearly, while they get off with nothing. We have 18 more games against them, I would let Zito take down someone later, which he'll say is an "ooopsy", he was only pitching in, and it got "away". Or better, Wellemeyer or Medders.

  5. According to Krukow, the Dodgers did not contact the Giants at all, which is normal for HBP, but not kosher when the player is injured, and particularly when the player is hit in the head.

He says something will happen eventually, but said the same thing as I, that with the rules today, we lose our reliever for a week.
