Game Wrap: 04-06-2010

The Giants' winning formula all spring was tight pitching and timely hitting. They worked that formula to perfection tonight in a beautiful win over Houston 3-0. Key lines:

Edgar Renteria- 1 for 3, BB. Anybody ready for Rent to bat leadoff?

Pablo Sandoval- 1 for 3, BB. It wasn't pretty, but Panda eluded a tag coming down the 3B line and managed to roll across home plate with the second run of the 6'th inning and the game.

Aubrey Huff- 2 for 4. Two hits off the LHP.

Aaron Rowand- 0 for 5. Rowand's whole career has been one of hot streaks and horrendous slumps. Too bad his hot streak came when the games didn't count. He hasn't so much as sniffed a hit or a walk so far.

Barry Zito!- 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. When was the last time Barry Zito pitched a good game in April? This one was a beauty! He's added a nice hard, yes hard, slider to his arsenal that he can get under the hands of RH hitters. That and his offspeed stuff enabled him to even bust a 87-88 MPH fastball in on the hands several times. Oh man, the Giants chances of having a special season just went waaay up!! I'm sure Zito will have his bad games but this effort, and the stuff he appeared to have, make me think they will be far fewer than the what we are used to from him.

Brian Wilson- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K, S(2). My buddy who drafted Wilson for his fantasy team is ecstatic. Well, so am I, but for a different reason. Wilson has looked so comfortable out there the last two games. I think he's finally gotten to the point where he knows he has great stuff and he's confident he will get the outs.

There was a reviewed play on a drive by Jeff Keppinger that bounced off the top of the LF wall back onto the field for a double. The fans in LF and the 'Stros announcers on TV were trying to say it bounced off a green railing behind the top of the wall. They said the call wasn't overturned because the replay wasn't clear. I thought it WAS clear that it bounced off the top of the yellow line painted on the wall. What did you think?
