Tell me if you've seen this movie before. The Giants, coming off an exhilarating series win over a top team on the road, start a series against one of the worst teams in MLB.....and do a faceplant! Key Lines:
Gorkys Hernandez CF- 2 for 3, 2 BB. BA= .293. The Magic Wandu is back. Can't do much more a the leadoff guy than get on base 4 times.
Andrew McCutchen RF- 2 for 4, 2B, HBP. BA= .264. Cutch's double was the key hit in the Giants 3-run 5'th inning driving in a run. He eventually came around to score himself after an intentional walk, balk, intentional walk and unintentional walk. He is hitting .350 for the month of June.
Evan Longoria 3B- 2 for 4, BB. BA= .247. Longoria reached base 3 times and committed his 11'th error.
Madison Bumgarner LHP- 5.1 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 4.76. Bum seemed to be cruising through 3 innings. Even after giving up 2 runs on a homer and RBI triple by Lewis Brinson in the 4'th inning, he seemed to have the game in hand, especially after the Giants took a 4-2 lead in the 5'th. The 6'th inning got rocky in a hurry and Bum was not happy with the home plate ump. After Bochy came out and replaced him, Bum strode down on an angle that put him closer to home plate and was clearly jawing at the ump who gave him the heave-ho sign, which didn't mean a think except a fine for Bum, which I am sure he will consider a small price to pay for getting it off his chest.
After all that, Bum was still in line to get the W after the Giants scored their 5'th run in the top of the 7'th, only to see their usually reliable bullpen break down and give up the 3-spot in the bottom of the inning to set the final score.

The Loss put the Giants at 3 games behind the NL West leading D'backs pending the outcome of the D'Backs vs Pirates which the D'Backs are losing 5-1 in the 7'th inning. The Dodgers gained sole possession of 2'nd place by not playing. They are 2.5 games out pending the D'Back final. The idle Rockies sit at 3.5 games back in 4'th place while the Padres lost and drop 6 games off the pace, at least for now.

Chris Stratton tries to even the series tomorrow evening facing Trevor Richards.

A graphic before the game -- Coming in Bumgarner had a career 4.73 ERA against the Marlins. Baseball Reference hasn't updated, but I'm sure it's higher after yesterday.
ReplyDeleteAnd the D'Backs stormed back from the 5-1 deficit to beat the Bucs 9-5 so the Giants are 3.5 games behind in 3'rd place in the NL West.
ReplyDeleteBum to ump: I'll still be pitching when you're replaced by a robot!
