Game Wrap 6/20/2010

The Giants offense broke through for a 5-run rally in the 6'th inning to back a Quality Start by Derek Holland and the Giants held on through a nail biter 9'th inning for the Win.  Key Lines:

Alen Hanson SS- 0 for 0.  BA= .314.  I nearly had a stroke when I saw that Kelby Tomlinson PH for Hanson to lead off the Giants half of the first inning.  Turns out Hanson fouled a ball off his knee and left the game but x-rays are negative and he should be fine in a day or two.  Whew!

Brandon Belt 1B- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .305.  Belt really just picked up where he left off before the appy.  He's slashing .278/.381/.500 since his return.

Hunter Pence LF- 2 for 4, SB(2).  BA= .195.  Pence got the Start in LF with Mac moving over the RF and Cutch getting the day off.

Gorkys Hernandez CF- 1 for 4.  BA= .285.  1 for 4 doesn't look like much, but Gorkys capped the 5-run rally with a 2-run single to RF that culminated a 14 pitch AB.  He started the AB going into a 0-2 hole then fouled off 8 pitches while working the count back to 3-2.  OK, I know Gorkys is 30 years old but he seems to be growing as a hitter right in front of our eyes.  Here's my take:  He is biologically 30 years old but is much younger than that as a hitter.  He still has just 780 PAs in his MLB career which is barely over 1 season's worth.  Prior to last year he had just 235 PA.  So last year and this year is the the first he has gotten semi-regular PA's at the MLB level.  He was once a highly rated prospect whose talent the Giants are finally unlocking.  And, he's had multiple minor league seasons with SLG% over .400 so the apparent newfound power is not totally out of nowhere.

Derek Holland LHP- 6 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 4.48.  This line underestimates the strength of Holland's performance.  He allowed just 1 run through 6 innings, but then allowed the first 2 batters to reach base in the 7'th.  Tony Watson came in and allowed both of those inherited runners to score.  Holland's ERA for the month of June is 3.15 with 23 K's and 7 BB's in 20 IP over 4 starts.

Sam Dyson RHP- 0.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.94.  Dyson got the Save last night and had an easy opportunity for another with a 3-run lead.  It wasn't a Blown Save, but it was a blown Save Opportunity.  Reyes Moronta had to come in and get the last out with a K to earn his first Save of the season.  Stay tuned!

The Win enabled the 3'rd place Giants to gain 0.5 games on the NL West Leading D'Backs who were idle.  The Giants are now 4 games out of first place.  The Dodgers lost to the Cubs 4-0 to slip to 2 games behind in 2'nd place.  The Rockies sit 5 games behind in 4'th place pending the outcome of their game with the Mets while the Padres got smacked by the A's 12-4 to fall 7.5 games off the pace.

The Giants open a 4-game weekend series with the Padres tomorrow with Madison Bumgarner still looking for his first Win of the season facing Giants nemesis Tyson Ross.

  1. Dyson leads the team among relievers with 36 appearances out of 75 games. He pitched for the 3rd straight day so he gets a pass. He's been pitching well, but is among the relievers that been getting a lot of work.. I'm more bothered with Strickland hurting himself and the team.

  2. Hundley: I started laughing my ass off when he was trying for that double and Krukow was saying 'Catchers Legs." He looked like Mike Engelberg (the chubby catcher in the 'Bad News Bears' kids (1976)) in Little League who hit the ball and by God he was not going to 'just take first and celebrate' but milk it for all it was worth (Engelberg ends up with an in-the-park homerun). Then the bad throw and error and bang! he was on third. I think I laughed my ass off for a good five minutes because it was such a comical play at the time.

In the end it wasn't as funny because Watson & Dyson just about blew it and it ended up being the critical run.

  3. Just another game wondering what will go wrong and when.
Wasn't this one a little stranger than most?
Who would have thought that one of the few bright spots this year would be gone by the 4th pitch?
Who would have thought that 5 of the 6 runs would be batted home by the bottom of the order?
Who would have thought that the reliable Tony Watson would allow 2 hits to score his inherited runners?
Who would have thought that Hernández would lose a ball in the sun (it sure was bright), almost get beaned by it, and then have the next batter put another one up in the sun but where he could find and catch it?
Who would have thought that Dyson would pitch so bad and still get a hold?
Who would have thought that the Giants would go 4-8 RISP and score half their runs with 2 outs?
Who would have thought, the way things have been going, that Moronta would put the Marlins away on 4 pitches?
    What's in store tonight?
Well, how 'bout both the Shark and Bum starting @ 7:05 and 7:15, respectively?

  4. Tuesday: Bochy names Dyson closer, Watson will set up.
Wednesday: Oops! Was that an off day?

    Are the Giant relievers overworked?

There are no SF relievers in the top 30 (which on average would be 1 per team), but there are 4 in the next 32 (which on average would be another 1 per team).

There is a 5th Giant at #68 (on average 2.3 per team).

That doesn't include Ty Blach who, starting and relieving, has 150% total pitches (76.2) of the most used reliever (51) in MLB. Don't know how to count that, but Giants have 6 relief pitchers with a lot of pitches but none near the top 5 or 6 (Watson has 34.2, Austin Pruitt has 51).

    1. Sorry, a rewrite:

      Are the Giant relievers overworked?

Although there are no SF relievers in the top 30 of pitchers with the most innings pitched, there are 5 Giants with the most IP's among the 68 relief pitchers with the most innings pitched.
For perspective, on average there would be 2+ pitchers per team among 68 pitchers if each had its share.
The Giants have more than double that. So, yes, the Giant relievers are pitching a lot of innings.
That doesn't include Ty Blach who, starting and relieving, has 50% more innings pitched than the reliever with the most innings pitched.
IMHO, that has to change if the Giants are going to contend: they have to get more out of their starters.
      Doh.
