Game Wrap 6/12/2018: Marlins 3 Giants 1

Mike Krukow tells a story, true or apocryphal, about someone asking Willie Mays who was the toughest pitcher he ever faced.   Willie's answer:  "The guy I never saw before!"  The Giants must believe it is a true story because they almost inevitably stumble offensively against average rookie pitchers they've never faced before.  Tonight was no exception as the offense failed to capitalize on a Quality Start by Chris Stratton.  Key Lines:

Chris Stratton RHP- 7 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.56.  Stratton gave up a 3-spot in the 3'rd inning but got out of it by turning a comebacker into a DP.  He gave up 3 of his 4 hits and 1 walk in the inning.  Aside from that blemish, he threw 6 innings of 1-hit ball.

Trevor Richards RHP(Marlins)- 6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.41.  Richards was the rook who the Giants had never seen before.  He was pretty much of an unknown before this season but has put up very good numbers in the minors averaging more than a K/IP for his minor league career.

The Loss drops the Giants 4 games behind the D'Backs pending the outcome of the Snakes vs Bucs game.  The Dodgers are 3 games back and still playing the Rangers.  The Rockies lost to the Phillies to drop 4.5 games behind the leaders while the Pesky Padres topped the Cardinals and sit 6 games back.

Andrew Suarez tries to avoid a sweep tomorrow facing lefty Caleb Smith.  I think the Giants had a Caleb Smith in their organization recently, but this appears to be a different Caleb Smith who came up in the Yankees organization.

  1. Bingo! Caleb Smith is listed as Restricted on the Richmond Flying Squirrels roster.

  2. What I find very frustrating; is when they can't seem to hit a pitcher that they don't try some small ball. Or do a Brett Butler impersonation. Sheesh!

  3. **4 game series so we can salvage a split (please giants).

It hasn't killed us because some of these weak slaps have turned into hits - but I'm officially worried that Bochy can't be trusted with Hunter Pence. He will start 3-4 times a week just because Bochy likes it. Mac isn't doing himself any favors by struggling and striking out at the worst times, but let the kid get some consistent ABs. Bochy is too loyal to his vets, reminds me of Bengie being on his last leg and starting over Posey. Molina had to be traded to make Posey the everyday catcher and he never looked back
