Game Wrap 6/24/2018: Giants 3 Padres 2 in 11 innings

Dereck Rodriguez turned in the strongest start of his young MLB career, but the Giants needed extra innings to finish off the Pesky Padres to win the 4-game series.  Key Lines:

Gorkys Hernandez CF- 1 for 5, HR(9).  BA= .284.  Were it not for Gorkys' dinger in the 6'th inning, the Giants would have lost this game 1-0.

Andrew McCutchen RF- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .263.  Cutch started the winning rally with a double in the 11'th after the Giants fell behind 2-1 in the top of the inning.

Buster Posey C- 2 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .289.  Buster drew an intentional walk from Brad Hand after Cutch's 1-out double in the 11'th.

Hunter Pence 1 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .196.  Pence looked out of whack as usual all game until the 11'th.  After Brandon Crawford was HBP to load the bases, Pence walked it off with a double to drive in the tying and winning runs.

Dereck Rodriguez RHP- 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K'S.  ERA= 3.82.  Manuel Margot homered off DRod to lead off the game and 2 more batters reached base in the inning.  Then Young Dereck settled right down and cruised through the next 6 innings hardly breaking a sweat while allowing just 2 more baserunners.  Wow!  It looks like the Giants have a couple of young keeper pitchers in Andrew Suarez and Young Dereck. Going to be awfully tough to send them down when Cueto and Shark are ready, but what else can the Giants do?

Bullpen- 4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  Mark Melancon, Will Smith and Sam Dyson pitched scoreless innings.  Reyes Moronota allowed a walk in 0.2 IP and Ty Blach allowed the inherited runner to score from 3'rd base with 2 outs when he allowed a single to LH batter Cory Spangenberg before getting the RH batting Carlos Villanueva.

The Win kept the Giants 5 games behind the NL West leading D'Backs in 3'rd place.  The Dodgers outscored the Mess 8-7 to remain in 2'nd place, 2.5 games behind the leaders.  The Rockies lost the the Marlins and are now 6.5 games behind in 4'th place while the Padres bring up the rear in the division, 10.5 games behind.

The Giants get a day off at home before starting a series against the Rockies with Derek Holland facing Chad Bettis on Tuesday, June 26.

  1. I say, when Shark and Cueto come back, move Holland to BP. Rodriguez could probably use more seasoning. What a gift it is to have three young studs in the rotation. Add Cueto and Bum, and the Giants have a wealth of talent.

  2. They could send Pierce Johnson down for one, which might encourage Bochy to keep Rodriguez in the bullpen. Blach and Morontha also have minor league options. How many times have we've seen Pence look out of whack all game then all of a sudden come up with the big hit. Good for him! I was surprised the Pads chose to intentional walk Buster. Hand is a top flight closer.. nice series win. I can see why teams are interested in Padres relievers. Hand, Stamin, Yates, Castillo all looked good.

  3. what else can the Giants do when Shark is ready?

Package Shark (to a team he approves), along with Ajax for 45 mil total savings.
Pick up some salary if necessary, but find a partner who wants a 'proven starter' and 4th OF.

    Go with the kids!

    1. That is such a good idea! The three rookie pitchers are looking solid for June - add back Bumgarner and Cueto and you don't need Shark and you certainly don't need A Jackson. Who would come looking for Samardjiza? Some other team with a very large ball park...

  4. Bitter sweet that Pence drove it in - it sucks because I like the guy, but he has no place in the lineup. Was batting 6th for crying out loud, he's really what you want behind Crawford having an amazing season ?

It worked out, but he just threw the bat at a bad pitch and happened to hit a 36 hopper down the line. Sounds terrible to say because I'm glad we won, but it probably bought him more time.

Bochy should have let Hanson but in the previous inning, he needs to learn small ball (been saying this for years )

    1. Agree with the first two paragraphs here.

It's been 3 years since Pence was a productive player, though we all love him still. My goodness, even when it's dead obvious Bochy can't give up on the vets. Delivering a run scoring, game winning hit does not equate to WAR points on it's own. Let Slater play!

    2. Pence needs to graciously pull a hamstring right away and end his career on his game-winning hit yesterday. Win win!

    3. How about the third paragraph, that Bochy should learn how to play small ball, and specifically that he should have had Hanson bunt. That would on average have increased the likelihood of scoring from 34.2% to 48.2%; and in fact, Baggarly tells us that Bochy, who maybe knows baseball strategies as well as Anonymous, thought about having Hanson bunt, but rejected the idea because Hanson hits righties better than anyone else he, Bochy, has. One might want to know how the likely success of the bunt (rather than, say, a pop-up or two strikes from missed/foul bunt) would weigh for Hanson against the likelihood of a hit plus that of a productive out. Bochy probably can appraise that from watching Hanson play and some sabermetric help from whoever advises him about such things. I’ll risk doing Anonymous an injustice by betting that he wrote without even looking up Hanson’s splits against RHP.

  5. Giants are the only team with a >.500 record that is predicted (by CBS Sportsline.com) to finish with a <.500 record.
    Product of RA > RS?
Twins record is 6 games <.500 and predicted to finish @ .500 but their RA v RS is a little better than Giants.

Andy Green played numbers (Hand good against Belt, Crawford, & Pence, not good against McCutchen and Posey) but committing a baseball faux pas intentionally walking winning run on base.
Brad Hand compounded the sin by hitting Crawford.
    Baseball gods smiled on Pence.

    Winning formula: score your runners!
Before Pence's hit: Giants were 0-6 RISP and losing, Padres 1-3 and winning the game!

  6. How 'bout this:
Williamson gets sent down to find his stroke, Jackson stays and never had a stroke!
    Jackson's .241 BA is yesterday's news, he's 4-22 in June.
Are the Giants too proud to admit a mistake?
Hernández is a "good enough" place holder and someone might pick up Jackson and save the Giants up to 3/4 million$ over 2 years if Octagon can sell someone on him. Give that about a 1% shot!

    1. 3/4 million$: $750,000 not 3 to 4 million

  7. Hernández has started 45 of the Giants 79 games and has hit 9 HRs in those games, a pace of 1 per 5 games.
With 83 games left, say he gets 80 starts and he continues his pace: 80 ÷ 5 = 16 more HRs + the 9 he has = 25 HRs!
Sure hope the drug police don't read this!
