Down on the Farm: 5/31/2018

AAA  Sacramento River Cats defeated the El Paso Chihuahuas 7-3:

Steven Duggar CF- 4 for 5, 3 2B, 3B.  BA= .273.
Austin Slater RF- 2 for 3, 2 BB, SB(6).  BA= .373.
Hunter Pence LF- 0 for 5.  BA= .301.
Ryder Jones 3B- 4 for 5, 2B.  BA= .293.
Conner Menez LHP- 7 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 3.27.

Steven Duggar is 7 for 13 with 2 BB's over his last 3 games and is hitting .359 over his last 10.  Ryder Jones hit .330 for the month of May.  Austin Slater just keeps on hitting:  .358 for April, .383 for May.  Does Pence's 0 for 5 impact the Giants roster decisionmaking?  IMO, the Giants starting OF by no later than Opening Day of next year needs to be Mac Williamson in LF, Steven Duggar in CF and Austin Slater in RF.  Maybe switch Mac and Slater?  This was Conner Menez' second AAA start and much improved from the 4 runs in 4 IP on 4/12/2018.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels outscored the Bowie Baysox 7-6:

Luigi Rodriguez PH/RF- 1 for 2, SB(11).  BA= .409.
Miguel Gomez 2B- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .321.
Jerry Sands 1B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .206.
Ronnie Jebavy CF- 2 for 4, 2B, BB, SB(9).  BA= .194.

*********************************************************************************

A+  San Jose Giants beat the Visalia Rawhide 5-2:

Bryce Johnson CF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .259.
Joe Panik DH- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .286.
Alen Hanson 2B- 1 for 3, HR(1).  BA= .333.
Jalen Miller 2B- 1 for 1.  BA= .315.
CJ Hinojosa SS- 2 for 3.  BA= .667.
Madison Bumgarner LHP- 4.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 1.93.

Rehab team.  Bummy looks ready to go.  Let's activate him, already!

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets pounded the Greenville Drive 9-2:

Nick Hill LF- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .338.
Heliot Ramos CF- 0 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .224.
Shane Matheny 3B- 3 for 4, BB.  BA= .264.
Manuel Geraldo SS- 3 for 5, HR(7).  BA= .331.
Ryan Kirby 1B- 1 for 5, HR(7).  BA= .216.
Rob Calabrese C- 2 for 4, 3B.  BA= .234.
Jason Bahr RHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.26.
Camilo Doval RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 5.50.

This is looking more and more like a true breakout season for Manuel Geraldo.  He's busting out some serious HR pop in the process.  Camilo Doval has a 2.03 ERA with 17 K's and 3 BB's in 13.1 IP.

  1. C.J. Hinojosa made his 2018 debut last night after coming off the restricted list. Nice start at the plate.

  2. Slater has 20 BBs and 22 K's to go along with gaudy OPS.

  3. Is Year 5 Make or Break for Joe Panik?
Although he has a GG and an AS appearance, he has only one year (2015 3.3 WAR) when he was above reserve level (WAR B-Ref: 2+ Starter, 0-2 Sub). His 4-year average is 2.1, barely a "starter."
He has a lot of trouble staying on the field. If he is activated now he'll need to play in 90% of the remaining games to make 120 for the season, roughly his average, and not what key players should do.
He'll be 28 in October -- does anyone have confidence he'll do better health-wise going forward?

  4. From looking at everything, it seems like the Giants have 6 field players in SAC and SJ basically ready for SF - Slater, Pence (for various reasons), Panik, Hanson, Duggar and Ryder Jones....When Panik and Hanson finish the rehab, who goes? The last pitcher and Tomlinson??

The outfielders are much harder to figure...Probably only Pence comes up (who goes??) while Slater and Duggar just keep playing in SAC and waiting and waiting (which has been fine for Duggar to work things out)..But they could easily replace Jackson and Blanco...

Ryder Jones doesn't really have a home in SF unless Longoria gets injured long term..even then, there Sandoval..So I expect Jones in any trade the Giants make for a pitcher...

And Madbum comes back Tuesday (Suarez??) and Melancon is just about ready...Gearin??..And when do we see Ray Black?

Giants have ALOT of decisions to make...Tough job.....and, as the season moves forward, a lot depends on their position in the standings..I know they want to try and win but, failing that, they want to have guys like MCCutch, Pence, Blanco, whoever up their trade value..Playing the kids, at least until the season seems lost, may be further down the prioroty list...I don't know.

    Interesting times ahead!

  5. I could definitely see starting with a homegrown outfield next year. AJ moves to 4th OF, which is fine given his modest contract. Question is whether Luigi is the 5th OF? He seems old for AA but man what a season. Duggar, Mac and Slater could hold down the OF until some of the younger bucks are ready. Seems like we're starting to get decent "2 deeps" at the starting positions (Shaw, Hinjosa, Gomez, Jones in IF, Reynolds, maybe Fabian, Ramos in OF) other than catcher. Hmmmm.

Pitching needs some serious depth in the starter category, although some of the guys in AA and A +- seem ok. Gage is in AAA so maybe he's the real deal too?

I'd be happy with Bart and then pitchers from 2-5.

    1. I forgot about Shaw..maybe next year for him..It's good that there are so many OFS knocking at the door from, SAC because other than Luigi there's little in the OF at RICH and you will have to wait for the kids from SJ and AUG...Ditto on the IF except for RYAN HOWARD who might be higher up in the pecking list than Gomez and Hinojasa by next year.

So right about the pitching, boy does it need to be strengthened.. I know Suarez, Rodriguez and Beede are or have been up, but they are still very iffy...Other then that, There's really nobody in SAC other then maybe relievers Ray Black and Sam WOlfe (when healthy)....It seems like Shaun ANderson is the Big Horse that may be ready by next year some time..and relievers SImpson and Rutolo...Too early to tell on the SJ and Aug kids, but it looks promising..

  6. Some Giants prospects make BA's "Top-200 Power Rankings" for May:

    53. Conner Menez
    58. Jason Bahr
    61. Austin Slater
    111. Jalen Miller
    133. Manuel Geraldo

(These aren't their prospect ranking, but their power rankings based on monthly performance. (From a CoveChatter retweet.))

  7. Panik called up and Tomlinson just optioned to AAA. Pence comes up Saturday. Melancon will be activated later today after the Giants make a change on the 40-man.

  8. Kiley McDaniel said in his latest mock draft that the Giants will take either Joey Bart or cut an underslot deal with pitcher Cole Winn. They'll only take Casey Mize if he cuts his bonus demands down. I'll be disappointed if this happens. Any thoughts on this scenario?
I hope the Tigers take Mize.

    1. I read that too. I will watch for updates and write a post on my thoughts before the draft.
