Scouting the 2018 Draft: Giants Picks Rounds 11-20

Round 11, Pick #316.  David Villar 3B, College(South Florida).  B-R, T-R, 6'0", 205 lbs.  2018:  .374/.463/.648, 24 2B, 12 HR, 28 BB, 58 K, 219 AB.  Teammate of Shane McClanahan.  Lots of BB's, lots of K's, impressive power, competitive program.  On paper doesn't look that much different than Joey Bart.

*********************************************************************************

Round 12, Pick #346.  Sean Roby, 3B, JC(Arizona).  B-R, T-R.  6'2", 215 lbs.  2018:  .356/.429/.739, 15 2B, 2 3B, 22 HR, 21 BB, 28 K, 254 PA.  Nice stat line, but we've learned to not trust JC stats.  The low K rate may be a good sign.

*********************************************************************************

Round 13, Pick #376.  George Bell Jr, OF, JC(OK).  B-R, T-R.  6'4", 210 lbs.  2018:  .344/.456/.500, 3 HR, 13 BB, 12 K, 79 PA.  Not much info except that he IS the son of THAT George Bell.  Not sure why he only had 79 PA's.  Injury?  Intriguing name and size.

*********************************************************************************

Round 14, Pick #406.  Bryce Tucker, LHP, College(Central Florida).  6'3", 205 lbs.  2018:  2-2, 2.03, 26.2 IP, 16 BB, 35 K, 6 Saves.  Big lefty who worked as a college closer.  FB 90-92 MPH, iffy command.  Profiles as a lefty specialist in the pros.

*********************************************************************************

Round 15, Pick #436.  Matt Frisbee, RHP, College(UNC Greensboro).  6'5", 215 lbs.  2018:  10-2, 3.45, 91.1 IP, 23 BB, 116 K's.  FB goes 90-94.  Could increase if a relief role.  Uses height well with an over-the-top delivery.  Should excel in lower levels of he minors.  Challenge for guys like this is always what happens when they hit San Jose and the PCL.

*********************************************************************************

Round 16, Pick #466.  Trenton Toplikar, RHP, College(UCR).  6'3", 210 lbs.  2018: 6-3, 4.07, 84 IP, 16 BB, 62 K's.  Not a lot of info.  Over-the-top delivery.  Stat line does not stand out.

*********************************************************************************

Round 17, Pick #496.  Ryan Olenek, OF/IF/RHP.  College(Mississippi).  6'5", 185 lbs.  2018:  .350/.388/.464, 18 2B, 3 HR, 10 BB, 17 K, 237 AB.  This guy is really confusing to me.  Tall, skinny kid who had a breakout season at the plate for Ole Miss playing all 3 OF positions, 3B and 2B, bur mostly CF.  Listed as a pitcher by the Giants draft list but only made 1 appearance in 2018 which lasted 0.2 IP.  Kylie McDaniel really, really likes him but "assumes" he is unsignable.  Says he profiles best at 2B(at 6'5"?).  Profile reminds me a bit of Brandon Bednar.  Hit .283 in the Cape Cod League which explains the Giants interest.  We'll see.

*********************************************************************************
Round 18, Pick #526.  Bryan Hernandez, RHP, HS(PR).  6'2", 178 lbs.  Pretty much no information available here.

*********************************************************************************

Round 19, Pick #556.  Randy Norris, OF, College(Winston-Salem State U).  B-R, T-R, 6'1", 190 lbs.  2018:  .437/.475/.574, 5 2B, 5 3B, 4 HR, 34 SB, 11 BB, 21 K's, 217 PA.  Speedy OF from a DII school.  Scout who signed him comps him to Cameron Maybin.

*********************************************************************************

Round 20, Pick #586.  Jett Manning, SS, College(Alabama).  B-S, T-R.  6'1", 180 lbs.  2018:  .251/..330/.302, 17 BB, 38 K, 179 AB.  Let's just say I don't think he was drafted for his bat!

  1. Thanks DocB, much appreciated.

Seriously though, why the heck is a guy from a solid D1 school, with THAT kind of stat line, available in the 11th round?? Regardless, I dig. Let's see where he's at after his 1st full year in 2019.

    1. I'm guessing his D at 3B is marginal to bad and he may have to move to 1B/DH defensively in which case his offense might not be enough to cut it.
