  1. My call up thoughts:

Cordier and Strickland. Need to figure out if they can cut it with some of our reliever contracts expiring.
Heston. We have one spot open at a minmum, maybe two. I'd like to see Peavy signed for a 1 year deal. He's been very solid since he moved over. But we have would still have Cain, Peavy, Hudson and Bumgarner. That still leaves one, as you'd have to think (hope) Timmy is moving to the pen full time.
Carbonell and Brown. Former is killing it. Latter needs to be given a shot. We will need a 4 and a 5 OF next year, not to mention likely replacement for Morse. Blanco has been hot but there have been plenty of times non existent. Let's give these guys a chance in a penant race to see if they can contribute.

Like what I'm seeing for Stratton at AA. Hopefully, he's not a blown pick. A rotation of Beede, Crick, Blackburn, and Blach is pretty nice, especially when you add Bumgarner and Cain. Don't think we skip a beat without Escobar.

Let's start the petition to Sign Panda Now.

  2. I think we may have found our 5th starter in Petit. Even with his arbritation coming up he will still be fairly cheap and looks like he has turned the corner. I'd sign him to a 2 year deal with an option for a 3rd which would be his FA year. He's a good bridge as some of our younger guys develop and olders guys like Hudson start to phase out.

  3. James Shields is a free agent next year. For the money we would have to give Peavy to stay it may be better to see what it would cost to get Shields on a 2-4 year deal. He would be a great #3 guy behind Bum and Cainer. I don't want to hear all this BS about how the payroll needs to be at or below $150MM. The Giants are making money hand over fist with over 300 sellouts and playoff revenue over the last 4 years. To say the payroll could grow to $165-170MM should not be absurd if they obtained "quality" guys. Adding a stronger core is just going to make more money for the Giants. It will just make them competitive for more years to come.

    1. Can you supply a list of pitchers of Shields's accomplishments who were satisfied with a 2-4 year commitment when they were FAs? It seems to me highly unlikely that the Giants could get someone of his age and skills for such a comparatively brief time.

    2. Forget payroll. It will take a minimum of a 5 year deal to sign Shields and it will cost a first round draft pick. Do you really want to invest $100 M in a pitcher for his age 33-37 seasons plus lose your first round draft pick? I agree that Shields is a very good pitcher, but the length of contract and loss of the draft pick are not attractive at all.

I would add that you can rail about the Giants payroll limits being BS all you want, but if they have a limit, they are the ones in control, so if you want to have a realistic discussion, you have to account for it. I'm not saying they have a payroll cap, because I don't know that they do, but if they do, it's the reality you have to account for in the discussion.

    3. As you saw with draft pick compensation this year even some really decent players didn't get the contracts they wanted. Stephen Drew, Nelson Cruz (although the PEDs didn't help), and Ervin Santana all got screwed in a way. Now I expect Lester and Scherzer to get huge deals. Shields may or may not get the contract you think he will.

You are completely right about its their money and they can do whatever they want with it. I am just saying that I believe they could go much higher than $150MM if they wanted to. I highly doubt if they were to go over $150MM they would be in the red. My point is if they are so stuck on $150MM for all accounts then I would have to rethink their committment to winning. Before you jump to conclusions, hear me out. Lets say we resign Pablo, Morse (or someone to take his place), Romo (or someone to take his place), add in arbitrations raises and we have about $10-12MM to sign a starting pitcher. If it is possible (this is an example) to get a guy like Shields for $17-18MM annually and would greatly improve the team, would they do it. Or stick with trying to sign a Vogelsong type player and roll the dice. I would like to believe they would jump on that notion. With Lincecum going to the bullpen, the addition of a decent starter is new priority. I don't see the urgency in sending Lincecum to the bullpen because even though he is struggling we are 16-11 when he starts. Maybe just skip 1-2 of his starts to send him the message. At the end of the day it would be nice to know if the Giants have the opportunity to pick up a piece that may get us closer to winning the division then they would do it. I do not believe in spending money just to spend money. Only if it will get us a quality piece.

    4. The Giants owe $123M next year to a dozen players. They have to re-sign or replace Crawford, Belt, Blanco, Sanchez, and Machi, Gutierrez, and Petit. With those, they're up to $130M. If they had a hard ceiling of $150M, that would leave $20M to sign or replace Peavy, Sandoval, Romo, Morse, and Vogelsong.

    5. I do not want to hear anything about commitment to winning or cheapness about a team that has already won 2 WS championships this decade and has taken care of its players the way the Giants have. This team is committed to winning and it is not cheap. I do think any team needs to have some constraint on their spending. I believe we've even seen the Dodgers blink a time or two.

I don't know what constraints the Giants are limiting themselves too, but I believe they will get the players they believe they need to get to win.

As for Shields and compensation, he's going to get paid and will likely get a 5 year deal. As much as I like him as a pitcher, I would not want the Giants to do a deal like that with him.

I think they can reasonably re-up Peavy, Vogey and Petit on much shorter deals and then hope Cain is healthy and ready by early in the season. Anything more than that would be very impressive.

    6. (Continued). What is the likelihood that in this financial situation, their budget isn't going to hit $165-170M? $15M, shall we say, for Sandoval alone, if the team is lucky? Where will they find $10-12M for a starting pitcher, over and above Peavy, Sandoval, and replacements? Can you sketch out, with the help of Cots Baseball Contracts, a reasoned, specific scenario for what you would like to see for the sums you're talking about? That would set up a conversation beyond grousing or balking, pie-in-the-sky or stick-in-the-mud, and beyond vagueness plus fervor.

    7. That is nearly impossible without knowing arbitration numbers. Can it be done with $150MM? Not a chance. $155-160MM? A decent chance.

      Things I would strongly consider:
      1. Dump Romo or drastically reduce his salary. I think his closer days are over. Maybe we can get a guy from our farm system to be 8th inning guy. Lincecum could be in the 7th or 8th inning mix with Machi. If we add Strickland, Law, Cordier or Hall here this will save tons of money.
      2. Dump Vogelsong as 5th starter and start Petit. He does have skills. 2015 is his year in my opinion.
      3. Resign Pablo Sandoval but backload slightly. 2015 to be around 11-12MM and have significant increase afterwards. 30MM comes off of the books in 2016 (Hudson and Lincecum) so it won't be as much of a problem in 2016.
      4. Rethink Blanco. What if Brown or Carbonell get hot in ST? Give people like Perez or Jarrett Parker a shot.
      5. Contemplate trading Affeldt or Lopez?

    8. I think the Giants have made it obvious Romo is not going to get a big raise this offseason. If they can get him back for the same price he is being paid now, he's well worth it. If not, I think they will let him go.

Why on Earth do people keep thinking that Lincecum is going to magically turn into this awesome reliever? Because of a couple of appearances in the postseason in 2012? Right now, they'll be lucky if they get mop-up duty from him!

Strickland, Law, Cordier and Hall are all interesting arms, but should absolutely not be counted on for anything other than the 6'th or 7'th guys in the bullpen.

Vogelsong on a similar 1 year deal as this year would be a bargain. Why dump that?

Rethink Blanco? Why? The guy has been one of the best 4'th OF's in baseball for the past 3 years including this one. What if Brown or Carbonell get hot? That would be great, but you can't go into ST counting on it. Perez has had his shot. There is not much reason to think Parker will break the Mendoza line in the majors.

What would you use for LH bullpen help if you traded Affeldt or Lopez? Lefty specialists are essential components of a winning team and there are not a lot of good ones out there.

    9. A legitimate budget question is will the Giants go over budget for one year, 2015? A budget hump, if you will.

For 2015 they ideally sign Pablo (the $15M - $20M hump). Plus continue on with Crawford, Belt, Blanco, Sanchez, Machi, Gutierrez, and Petit (baseline players). Plus some form of FAs in Peavy, Romo, Morse, and Vogelsong. Agree with Rodger above that these FAs could be easily managed into the standard $150Mish budget.

The key is $30M comes off the books in 2016 (Hudson and Lincecum). The backside of the hump. The new starters, replacements for Hudson, Lincecum and Petit/Voggie ideally come up from the minors. 2 - 3 cheap, young starting arms from the Beede/Crick/Stratton/Mejia/Blach/Mella/Blackburn/Ysla/Flores/Gregorio/Kickham crop. Plus start to turnover the bullpen arms (Romo, Affeldt, Lopez) to cheap, younger arms.

The good news is the Giants have kept most of their recent FA contacts short term. If Cain come back, they will be in good shape regarding productive long term mega deals - MadBum, Buster, Cain, Panda.

So, the question is will the Giants be willing to spend into a one year budget hump to Pay the Panda? I don't think that's asking to much from our billionaire owners.

    10. History would suggest that there will be a 10-15% increase in payroll, but no balloon increase. I think they will make a strong effort to re-sign Sandoval, but won't win a bidding war if it comes to that.

      Delete
    11. History would suggest that they won't win the bidding war for Panda. They had their chance to sign or trade him last year.

Unless they are willing to absorb a one year budget hump above the 10%-15% standard increase. This is something the Giants owners can reasonably do with their cash. And history does suggest that the Giants have signed their proven, in-house stars to long-term deals.

    12. If they can sign Pablo in an end-of-season deal like they did with Pence, I think they will get it done. If not, and he hits the open market, he's outa here.

  4. Could this be Sabean blocking the Dodgers? If so, nice job Sabey Sabes.

"Rockies left-hander Jorge De La Rosa was claimed off waivers by an unknown team who made the move in order to block the southpaw from being dealt elsewhere, CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman reports. The claim was made long enough ago that Colorado has since pulled De La Rosa back from revocable trade waivers and he’ll finish the rest of the 2014 season in the purple pinstripes."
