confusing Richmond box score, but all figured out. Nicer line for Mejia for sure.
ReplyDeleteWhen will they ship Carbonell to Richmond? Isn't he qualified for AA having come out of Cuban league?
I'm guessing Carbonell starts next season in Richmond if he doesn't win a MLB job out of spring training.
DeleteI have no idea what the playoff situations are in the minors (The Giants typically like to do well in the playoffs), but because Carbonell is in the mix for the 25 next year, I am not sure why they are not pushing him harder (promotion-wise). Maybe they want him in SJ so Boch and Sabes and Evans and whomever can watch him at a moments notice, or Lefebvre or Bam Bam can work with him in person?
DeleteThey ARE pushing him hard. He was supposed to go to S/K. They liked what they saw in rookie ball, skipped him to SJ.
DeleteAny downside to bringing him up for a look in September? He is already on the 40 man, so his options are already being used.
DeleteCarbonell is 23 and been playing in the Cuban leagues for how long? A+ seems a given. AA is probably where his talent level lies.
DeleteDo you suppose maybe the Giants EVALUATED him and determined the level they thought was appropriate? All the scouting reports I've seen say this kid is extremely talented but raw and a bit of a project. At the time of the signing they said he would go to S-K, but went to SJ, a higher level instead. I believe that shows the Giants are putting some thought into the process. Come on, guys! Have an ounce of faith in the Giants ability to evaluate players and an ounce of patience!
Delete"Have an ounce of faith in the Giants ability to evaluate players and an ounce of patience!"
DeleteLOL - but he's an outfielder.
The whole Giants can't develop OF meme is just that, a meme. It's really just a sample size thing. They have invested their top draft picks in up-the-middle-talent pitching, catching and middle infield and CF. The one time they went CF with Gary Brown, it hasn't worked out so far. The Giants overall OF talent in the minors is on the rise and we will eventually see a homegrown and developed OF. It takes time. You can't fill every position with homegrown talent all the time.
DeleteThe Giants have rarely invested first round picks or big money in OFs. And there have been the busts: Rafael Rodriguez, Gary Brown, Tony Torcato. As well as the almosts, like Nate, Freddy Lew and John Bowker. Those guys were 2nd-3rd round picks though. And the fanbase got a little chippy about them, and then you get the whole "Giants ruin their prospects" meme. We'll have another Chili Davis type someday. Maybe he'll be a Cubano!
DeleteSo what's the thought, do we think that the Giants actually have a shot at Rusney Castillo? If he were to sign, that would be pretty good insurance for the eventual Pagan injury and maybe Carbonell could slip in to a starting spot once Pagan's contract runs out in a couple of years. But, maybe a Castillo signing would signal the end for Pablo? Hard to see them signing both guys.

I agree that if they get Castillo, then it is likely the end of Panda. However, (I know Doc does not like this idea) I think Posey to 3B is not a horrible solution, so losing Panda may be mitigated.
DeleteHowever...
With Carbonell a legit contender for the OF next year and Panik establishing himself as the starting 2B, I am not sure there is room moving forward for Castillo. I like the idea of having 4 starting-quality OFers on the team, but do the players like that idea? Look at all the headaches it has caused in LA.
While I REALLY want Castillo, I am not sure he as perfect a fit for us as he may have been a few weeks ago.
I am not a scout and know very little of Rusney Castillo. From the information I have heard is that Castillo is MLB ready and can play 2B and OF. Many people have said that Carbonell is more of a project. Carbonell seems to be doing excellent in my opinion but in a very small sample size. So, if the Giants sign Castillo they must know what they are doing. They must believe he can get plugged in very quick and be our starting LF in 2015. Maybe Carbonell will become a trade chip. Maybe they think Castillo can play 3B. Who really knows? I trust the Giants that if they sign Castillo that they have thought ahead and will make everything work. I am always excited for an impact player to be signed and sometimes players you expect to be at a position in 1-2 years get turned into trade chips. That is baseball for you.
DeleteRog,
DeleteI read some loose comparison to Ron Gant. Sounds good to me. Hope they can fork out the dough. They need outfielders bad. And if they can get one making less than 10AAV that is a 2 WAR talent, that's still a good deal.
I will be surprised if the Giants sign Castillo. If they do, then Sabes has been doing a terrific sandbag job with the constant talk about budget and crying poor mouth. If they believe in his talent, I don't think they let current MLB needs dictate whether they sign him or not. It's way better to have too much talent than not enough. If they do sign Castillo, I do not expect it to impact the Sandoval situation one way or another.
DeleteI am not against moving Posey to 3B. It does look like a possibility. Bochy kind of mentioned it in an offhand comment a couple of years ago, I think. On the other hand, people talk like it's a foregone conclusion that he would be great there. He's never played the position except for 1 inning in college ball so he could say he played every position in one game.
Posey to third is a pipe dream. Just a few years in the squat plus the work done on his ankle does not render him happy feet at third.
DeleteI would think that Posey can handle 3B. His ankle looks pretty good now and he had enough range at SS to be a freshman all-American. He has a great arm and good hands and doesn't need quite the range at 3B that he would need at SS. I am all-in on Posey moving out from behind the plate due to his batting splits and the concussion worries.
DeleteFreshman in college is LONG ways back! I think at least half of all the players in MLB played SS somewhere along the way. It doesn't mean they can play it now.
DeleteI'm with you guys. Better to have more options than fewer. Yes, it costs money to have more options but I agree with Roger in that if the Giants sign Castillo, they must have a master plan in mind. Let's just hope the plan is a good one! They can always use a plug-and-play position player, since we don't really have any in the minors.

I am assuming this is a fake tweet but I got all excited last night for a few seconds. It is from a writer in South Carolina saying that the Giants have signed Castillo and Jay Z will address the media. This was last night and nothing has come out since. Sounds like this guy wants to add Twitter followers. It remains to be seen whether this story has any traction.

Despite the somewhat unattractive stat line from Beede, I am pretty encouraged by his performance so far. I'm even more encouraged by the showing by Logan Webb at age 17, albeit in a very SSS. And perhaps best of all has been the pitching of Stetson Woods... one can dream that the Giants have another Tyler Glasnow type of prospect on their hands... may take some work but the upside is enormous.
ReplyDeleteBeede line might not be great, but the one stat i like is the 0 walks if he harness his control watch out for him next year.
DeleteI agree 100% with johnny. His big issue is his control. If he can get that somewhat under control, he may legitimately be our #1 overall prospect going into next season.
DeleteThe plot thickens. Just heard Belt is at least few weeks away to possibly missing the rest of the season. Maybe that is why the interest in Castillo is getting stronger by the Giants. They could put Morse at 1B and have Castillo in LF. If they think he can do well at 2B then maybe Panik can move to 1B or vice versa. Either way with Belt out for possibly the rest of the season we have a definite need to address.
