Down on the Farm: 8/17/2014

AAA  Game 1  Fresno Grizzlies mauled the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 11-7:

Darren Ford(LF)- 2 for 4, 2 2B, 2 SB(32).  BA= .293.
Juan Perez(RF)- 2 for 3, HR(5).  BA= .324.
Brandon Hicks(3B)- 2 for 3, 2 HR(3).  BA= .200.
Guillermo Quiroz(Catcher)- 2 for 3, HR(3).  BA= .271.

Brandon Hicks prepping to be Pablo's replacement at 3B?  Just kidding!

AAA  Game 2  Fresno Grizzlies edged the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 4-3:

Juan Perez(CF)- 2 for 4, HR(6).  BA= .329.
Mark Minicozzi(1B)- 1 for 3, HR(11).  BA= .295.

AA  Portland Sea Dogs defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels 7-1:

Blake Miller(SS)- 3 for 4.  BA= .326.
Tyler LaTorre(Catcher)- 2 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .269.
Kyle Crick(RHP)- 1.2 IP, 2 H, 5 R, 4 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.77.

Just after I write a post about how much Crick has improved, he drops a stinker like this!  Ironically, all the outs he recorded were K's.  Blake Miller can hit!

High A  San Jose Giants beat the Stockton Ports 6-2:

Chuckie Jones(CF)- 3 for 4, BB, SB(14).  BA= .259.
Mitch Delfino(3B)- 1 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .289.
Tyler Horan(LF)- 1 for 4, HR(6), BB.  BA= .315.
Jorge Bucardo(RHP)- 2.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.18.
Stephen Johnson(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.08.

Horan has hit 6 dingers in 14 Cal League games and 21 total on the season between Augusta and San Jose.  Can't wait to see what he does in Richmond next year, the place where Giants power hitting prospects go to die.

Low A  Asheville Tourists swarmed over the Augusta Greenjackets 11-3:

Craig Massoni(RF)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .288.
Gabriel Cornier(Catcher)- 2 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .222.

Short Season  Boise Hawks topped the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 7-6:

Austin Slater(RF)- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .391.
Christian Arroyo(SS)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .322.
Brett Kay(2B)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .258.
Tyler Hollick(LF)- 2 for 4, SB(6).  BA= .239.
Nick Gonzalez(LHP)- 6 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.34.

AZL  Giants vs Reds suspended after 4 innings tied 3-3:

This game will be made up as part of a DH today. I will report the highlights in the next Down on the Farm post.

  1. Dr. B, it is time to start talking about Rusney Castillo and what a good fit he would be for the Giants! The more I read about this guy the more I think the Giants could use him not only immediately but also for years to come. It sounds like he is probably better suited for the OF which is fine looking towards next season and after that. He also has played some SS which means he should be able to play a little 2B right? With Panik down and 2B being out biggest weakness this year it would be worth it to take a chance on him there for the rest of the season with a few games in the OF. He is also more of a speed guy than a power hitter which could potentially fit well as a leadoff for us while Pagan nurses his chronic injuries or maybe in the 2 hole where we haven't had consistent production this year. There aren't any really good FA options this offseason for OF or 2B and this guy could be fairly affordable at 5-6 years for 50-60 million. No draft pick comp, no overpaying for past production (kid is in his prime), and he could fill multiple holes for us and the park should fit this kids style of play!

    1. No argument with any of those points. Just a wild guess, but I bet the Giants aren't thinking along those lines.

    2. I agree. However, Boston is 28th in the league from production from their outfielders and I expect them to outbid everyone. I think if the Giants see him as a guy that they could plug as an everyday player then it would be good move. I really think they need to look at 2015 where there is not much in Free Agency to speak of. This may be a small opportunity to get some decent talent at a bargain. The few OF that will be available will be way overpriced due to the demand of teams needing help.

    3. I was just going to add that I'll guess that $50-$60 is a significant underestimate of the final total signing package. The Giants have made it pretty clear they are not going to get into bidding wars for these Cuban players. They will continue to sniff around for under-the-radar types like Carbonell. Whether that is a wise strategy or not is in interesting discussion, but that is the way they roll.

    4. Sometimes, it pays to, uh, pay for quality.

I took a chance with some auto bodywork. Now, I have to pay more to get a professional to finish the job (too sad, so don't ask me for more details).

    5. True, and the Giants have a track record of paying for quality, but as we all know, there are no sure things and no guarantees in baseball except the amount of money being paid to the player.

  2. Sadly our replacement for Pablo now plays for the White Sox and hit his first grand slam of his career last night. Would have been nice to have kept Connor. I think he could have even play second base. Didn't like losing him then and now seeing what he is doing, liking it less.

    1. He has a .357 BABIP, so probably can't maintain what he's doing now, and revert to what he has done in earlier seasons.

    2. There was really no way to keep Gillaspie at the time without jettisoning Pablo which neither the Giants nor any other organization would do in that situation. Water under the bridge!

  3. Will the Giants be aggressive with Christian Arroyo? Send him to San Jose next season or see if he can sink or swim in Double A? Still very young and a lot to learn, but seeing Panik and Susac success makes me want to see him in Double A.

    1. Well, San Jose is High A and Richmond is AA. I'll guess Arroyo starts next season in San Jose and will stay there the full season if he does well. That is a reasonably aggressive, yet reasonable track for him.

  4. Was at the SJ-Stockton game yesterday. That Horan blast was indeed a no doubter off the bat. My dad mentioned to me that he reminded him of Brandon Belt because of his size. Dunno if that's true though...
Was really bummed that our Cuban Daniel Carbonell didn't play that day and we had to watch Shawn Payne instead. At least Daniel was nice enough to sign an autograph for me!

Props to the Giants bullpen for taking charge because Joe Kurrasch was getting beat up out there as the Ports managed to rattle off hit after hit.

    1. Horan is a bit shorter and stockier than Belt, at least according to listed measurements. I have Horan comped as a more athletic version of Jason Giambi.

  5. This just in: Clayton Blackburn has surpassed Kyle Crick on the Giants prospect list (it's a fluid situation).

    1. I wonder how his minor league numbers compared with those of John D'Aquisto?

    2. Someone compared Kyle Crick to John D'Aquisto over in one of the comments sections on MCC. D'Aquisto was much more wild! Crick's K/BB is approximately 2/1 while D'Aquisto's was nearly 1/1!

    3. You'd never know though. He seems to walk nearly 1/IP!! I'm pretty concerned about that kid turning the corner at this point. Yeah he's young, but I'd rather see him get hit than walk the whole opposing team.

    4. I believe that hittability is a worse prognostic sign for a pitching prospect than wildness.

  6. I'd like to see Blake Miller play a little 3B. Between Panik, Duffy and Adrianza the middle infielders look pretty decent. Aren't they being a little conservative with Austin Slater?

    1. I would think both Blake Miller and Matt Duffy might be possible 3B options if the Giants should end up losing Pablo.

    2. I'd think Duffy and Duvall can handle the gig. Duffy could be the next Conor Gillaspie or Bill Mueller but batting from right side. Duvall may just a need a place to get ABs and be a bat off the bench.

Blake Miller has some respectable numbers, but his RC+ of 109 at SJ isn't eye popping. He looks thin and projectable to me. He looked overmatched vs. hard throwing Aaron Blair when I saw him. So far so good in EL but a ways to go. Maybe the next Duffy.

    3. Blake Miller can't be thinner than Matt Duffy!
