When Jake Peavy took over Matt Cain's spot in the pitching rotation, he also took over the Caining role of pitching in bad luck and poor run support. In this game, it was simply a matter of the Giants hitters running into a hot pitcher, Wily Peralta, who shut them down while Peavy fell 1 out short of a QS while taking his 3'rd loss in 3 starts since coming to the Giants. Key Lines:
Jake Peavy- 5.2 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 4.73. Peavy allowed just one run through 5 after allowing a first inning run. He ran into trouble in the 6'th allowing back-to-back doubles to lead off the inning. He threw a total of 96 pitches in the game, so I'm guessing he was out of gas.
Wily Peralta- 6.2 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 9 K's. ERA= 3.42. This was Peralta's 4'th QS in 5 starts and in the other start, he allowed 2 runs in 5.2 IP.
The Loss dropped the Giants to 3 games behind the NL West leading Dodgers pending the outcome of their game with the Angels, which they are leading 6-0 in the 9'th inning. The Cardinals and Pirates won their games so the Giants trail the Cards by a percentage point in the race for the #1 Wild Card spot and lead the Pirates by 0.5 games for the second spot.
The Giants now move on to KC for a 3 game weekend series with Madison Bumgarner facing Jason Vargas in game 1.
