Down on the Farm: 8/8/2014

AAA  Tacoma Rainiers defeated the Fresno Grizzlies 4-3:

Jarrett Parker(RF)- 1 for 3, HR(2), BB.  BA= .250.
Austin Fleet(RHP)- 4.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 5 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 6.89.
Sandy Rosario(RHP)- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 5.23.
George Kontos(RHP)- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.22.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels beat the Portland Sea Dogs 5-1:

Mario Lisson(DH)- 1 for 4, HR(15).  BA= .279.
Blake Miller(2B)- 1 for 3, BB,  BA= .294.

High A  San Jose Giants edged the Lancaster Jethawks 2-1:

Daniel Carbonell(CF)- 3 for 4.  BA= .750.
Matt Lujan(LHP)- 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 4.40.
Stephen Johnson(RHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.03.

Carbonell moves all the way up to High A and raps out 3 hits.  An obviously talented athlete, the only question on him is can he hit?  So far, so good and you can't help but start to get excited about this one!

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets vs Savannah Sand Gnats postponed.

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes topped the Boise Hawks 4-3:

Seth Harrison(CF)- 2 for 4, 2B, SB(6).  BA= .286.
Johneshwy Fargas(DH)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .248.
Jose Reyes(RHP)- 6.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.03.

Fargas is hitting .324 over his last 10 games.

Rookie AZL  Giants outscored the Rangers 4-3:

Hector Mercedes(DH)- 2 for 4, 3B.  BA= .329.
Byron Murray(CF)- 2 for 4, 3B.  BA= .286.
Dylan Brooks(RHP)- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.55.
Nolan Riggs(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.
Stetson Woods(RHP)- 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

I did not realize the Giants had signed Byron Murray until he made his pro debut on Thursday.  African-American HS OF, stocky build but athletic enough to play CF.  Stole a base in his pro debut game.  This is a late round coup by the Giants scouting staff and front office, IMO.  Definitely a kid to watch!  Strong multi-inning appearances by The Two Tall Ones with Brooks getting the start.  Speaking of tall ones, Nolan Riggs is apparently an undrafted FA signee out of JC ball.  His is listed at 6'8", 235 lbs.

DSL  Giants pounded the Nationals 8-1:

Mecky Coronado(DH, 17 yo)- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .277.
Anthony Gomez(1B, 19 yo)- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .295.
Manuel Geraldo(SS, 17 yo)- 1 for 4, 2B.  BA= .237.
Deiyerbert Bolivar(LHP, 18 yo)- 5 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO- 6/0.  ERA= 1.42.

  1. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe all of the (healthy) 2014 draftees have made their debut now for the Giants. I think the SS they plucked somewhere just outside the 10th, Henning, is injured for the rest of the year. But Murray is a kid with an exciting skill set. He supposedly has huge raw power. After a little more time to reflect, I'm really starting to come around to this year's class. I think the Giants got another nice mixture of kids with Webb , Woods, the PR guys Lacen and Rivera, and Byron Murray to top it off. Of course, Beede and Garcia are the keys to success here, but I also like the early looks of guys like Ewing, Slater and Cole. If any one of those 3 hits as a pro, it's a major win.

I caught the last few innings of the SJ game on tv last night. I really think Carbonell can play. His swing is a tad loopy, but man does he have bat speed. He's also got plus foot speed, and he showed right away that he can be a difference-maker. 3 hits out of the leadoff spot, and easy stolen base off a 95 mph FB (that didn't actually count because Chuckie was called out on a check-swing... but DC still beat the throw easily). He scored the winning run on a ball Horan blasted to deep center for a walk-off win in the 9th. Long story short, I think Carbonell is going to move quickly through the system, and I think he's got a solid chance to be an impact player.

  2. Whither Mongo? Can Dominguez competently play all those positions? He's been very productive of late and looks like he might be useful in the show before September. We've seen all we need to see of Ishikawa.
