Barry Zito turned in a solid performance to quiet his critics just a bit while Buster Posey and Thomas Neal homered as the Giants defeated The Hated Ones in Glendale, AZ. Key lines:
Buster Posey- 1 for 2, HR(2), BB. In Buster we trust! He hit this one to RF.
Thomas Neal- 1 for 3, HR(1). Thomas The Tank Engine will probably play most or all of the season if Fresno, but could be the Giants LF of the future.
Emmanuel Burriss- 0 for 4, 2 SB. Darren Ford- 0 for 0, BB, SB. Mike Fontenot- 1 for 4. Can't really talk about this without including all 3 performances. With 1 out in the top of the 7'th, Neal reached base on an error. Burriss grounded into a force out and stole 2B. Ford walked. Then, with Fontenot batting, Burriss and Ford executed a textbook double steal. Fontenot then made the effort worth it by cashing in both runs with a single.
Barry Zito- 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. Zeets got out of a bases-loaded jam in the 2'nd with a DP grounder. Nice bounceback performance after his disastrous first outing.
Clayton Tanner- 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 1 K. Pretty typical line from Tanner. I imagine a 4.50 ERA with ugly peripherals is about his ceiling. If he is durable, that would be a decent #5 starter.
Jason Stoffel- 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. Stoffel has faced 2 batters this spring and struck out both. I believe both were with runners on base to get out of an inning.
Steve Edlefsen- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K, GO/AO= 2/0. Another guy who walks a lot of batters but may be able to get away with it by keeping the ball on the ground.
Madison Bumgarner makes his first spring start tomorrow against the Oakland A's. Matt Cain will attempt some light throwing.
