Down on the Farm: DrB's 2011 Giants Top 50 Prospects- Honorable Mention Part IV

Christopher Heston, RHP. BD: 4/10/1988. 6'4", 185 lbs. B-R, T-R. Low A: 5-13, 3.75, 148.2 IP, 33 BB, 124 K's, GO/AO= 1.75. A perfect example of why W-L records, especially in the minor leagues are meaningless. The numbers look like a typical line from a sinker-slider pitcher. ERA= 2.11 over his last 10 starts. K/BB of almost 4/1 shows good command. Will he get more hittable at higher levels? He deserves a chance to find out.

Brian Irving, RHP. BD: 4/24/1986. 6'2", 205 lbs. B-R, T-R. Low A: 7-6, 4.42, 106 IP, 37 BB, 80 K's, GO/AO= 1.71. Older and numbers not as good as Heston's at the same level.

Jeremy Toole, RHP. BD: 6/17/1988. 6'4", 235 lbs. B-R, T-R. Short Season(Salem-Keizer): 6-5, 3.87, 97.2 IP, 37 BB, 75 K's. Big RHP with a big fastball which reportedly has gotten up to the high 90's. Numbers nothing special at this level.

Andy Reichard, RHP. BD: 12/4/1984. 6'4", 235 lbs. B-R, T-R. A+: 2-1, 6.57, 12.1 IP, 9 BB, 8 K's. Low A: 6-1, 3.39, 95.2 IP, 22 BB, 92 K's. I've always like Reichard. He's tended to be a late starter with strong finishes. Stumbled in the Cal League but pitched very well back down in Augusta. Awfully old for the level though.

Craig Whitaker, RHP. BD: 11/19/1984. 6'4", 210 lbs. B-R, T-R. 4 levels: 2-1, 3.36, 67 IP, 45 BB, 67 K's. Supplemental first round draft pick out of HS in 2005. "Raw as rain" when he was drafted, he's never had the breakout year expected of him, and time is running out. The K/9 looks good but that BB/9 is ugly.

Chris Gloor, LHP. BD: 3/7/1987. 6'6", 255 lbs. B-L, T-L. Low A: 4-2, 2.65, 68 IP, 27 BB, 73 K's. Big LHP with great looking numbers out of the 'pen at a low level. I'm optimistic about him, but he'll have to prove it at higher levels.

Chris Wilson, RHP. BD: 11/27/1986. 6'2", 205 lbs. B-R, T-R. Rookie AZL: 0-0, 1.42, 6.1 IP, 0 BB, 10 K's, 1 Save. Low A: 0-2, 2.76, 16.1 IP, 6 BB, 18 K's, 4 Saves. Was out the first 2/3 of the season presumably with an injury. Came back to pitch in a closer's role again. I would expect to see him in that role with San Jose in 2011 if healthy.

Jason Jarvis, RHP. BD: 10/1/1987. 6'2", 195 lbs. B-R, T-R. Low A: 0-1, 3.07, 14.2 IP, 2 BB, 13 K's. Last appearance was May 9. Released by the organization a few weeks ago.

  1. The only guys that intrigue me on this list are Heston, Gloor and Toole. Heston is young enough and has decent k rates with ground ball tendencies. Gloor is a huge lefty with pretty nice results thus far so he is worth watching. Toole is still young and throws hard enough that you can't give up on that skil yet. My motto is that you can never have too many power arms or Ground ball guys who can get a K because that is what wins in the playoffs.
