Spring Training Game Wrap: Indians 7 Giants 1

The dog days of spring training continued for the Giants as they lost to Cleveland and got more bad news on the injury front. Key lines:

Miggy Tejada- 1 for 3, HR(1). BA= .220. Tejada has come under a torrent of criticism for appearing to be over-the-hill on both defense and offense. Maybe this will be the start of something good?

Barry Zito- 6 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 2.49. Zeets didn't pitch all that badly. If he keeps pitching this well into the season, he gonna be alright.

Ramon Ramirez- 0.1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 0 K's. ERA= 7.71. Gotta be a bit concerned about our two midseason bullpen acquisitions from last year.

Dan Runzler- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 2.57. Dan the Man keeps making a case to be on the opening day roster.

The Giants learned today that Cody Ross has a tear in his calf muscle and will likely miss at least 3 weeks which carries over well into the regular season. I'm guessing it's closer to 4-6 weeks if the muscle is torn.

Brian Wilson will try to throw again tomorrow but at this point is "50-50" for the regular season.

Ehire Adrianza, the Giants shortstop prospect, underwent surgery to repair a torn ligament in his hand. Ouch!! He'll likely miss at least 2 months of the season. He really needed this season to develop his hitting too.

The Giants travel to Surprise to take on the KC Royals in another evening game tomorrow.

  1. bad news for adrianza....feel for the kid, he has some mad skills...all he needs is a bat

ross is gone for all of april...rowand gets a reprieve

wilson is gonna be out at least the first week...the giants will not let him play unless he is 110 percent

with the shaky springs of our two midseason arms, im thinking that the giants will offer kroon something more substantial to keep him in the fold and runzler will not be moving into a starters role

its a good thing that the org is pretty deep when it comes to pen arms...starters is a different story

  2. Too bad about Adrianza, saw that news too. Yeah, sets him back a bit, but maybe now he can spend the down time using that new video tool the Giants are raving about.

  3. Very interesting how this season is forming. Last year, injuries were alot different than this year. Last year the older veterans seemed to lose time, but the Giants seemed to just stick around throughout the season. But it was the older veterans that were injured, however, I am not too sure that the Giants can afford to lose a component of the inner core, and they are the young veterans. Look at it, anyone of the older veterans can be replaced but the core (Wilson, Lincecum, Cain, Posey, Bumgarner and Sanchez) are irreplaceable parts. Lose just one of them and I find it most difficult to repeat even if it may seem possible. The older veterans seem to nurture the mental drive which they could still do even on the bench. But the skills that got them to Baseball Heaven is a machine with gears that have to operate together. I refer to the young guys as "veterans" because anyone that wins a WS is a veteran. Just an opinion...

  4. Opshuns,

I agree. They may have been a band of misfits, but the guys in that core are anything but misfits, well, except maybe Timmy. But yeah, those guys you named are serious stars of the game and are as good as any core in baseball. The Giants can ill afford to lose even one of them for an extended period.

  5. Of all the injuries, I think Adrianza may be the worst for the org as a whole so far. Ross was a lower-tier starter for us, and he plays a position of depth. Wilson will be shut down for a short while, but out pen is so stacked, we can withstand the hit for a short-while. Cain, I think, is just taking it slow during ST.

Adrianza, however, was entering a key season to show if he could be the solution next year (or maybe even this year) as short. Now we are all-in with Crawford (and a lesser extent Jurica) as SS.
